And if this is understood then there is no reason •s the world that it should not ' . _ ' eld all year long. For man stands in need of every: day repentance and daily cleans- ing. Lent is a dangerous thing. Dr. , G. Campbell Morgan has, said that there are seven times of crisis to be seen in the life of Christ, and the Trans1 gur- ation is'one' of them. The story of this event is most perplexing and difficult eta understand. 'Teter did not know what .he 'said .on .this occasion. What about ourselves? It defies all explanation and calls us to won- der and worship. "When I this wonder contemplate, niy spirit does in reverence wait." Shortly before the Transfigur- ation Peter had made the Great Confession, "Thou (Jesus) art the Christ!" This word was not the product of human genius, but Gochinspired. "Vo one can say `Jesus is Lord' except by the Holy Spirit." - But what Peter took to mean nothing but royalty and dory was to be first of all a Cross, said Jesus. And Peter rebelled. ' And not only did Jesus rebuke Peter be- cause of his satanic rebellion and .u.ribeliref,,. bull. +.•:,made it -also_ very plain that the Cross was a necessity for mans saIvation, both His Cross to save the e world and the cross of the disciple as a proof and consequence of that salvation. Strange words inde.edh A week later Jesus took Peter, John and James with Him to the mountain, the place of crisis. For here begins Gethsemane, here ie the_ -point of _no return:_ FTiseati and being forsaken by God. Wire Jesus prays He be - conies transformed or transfig- ured (Gr. metamorphosed), all Majesty, Glory 'and Purity; the sinless Son. There is no bar- rier between Him and God, He is one with the Father. He does not- have . to die in order to go to heaven, to be with the Father. tut He is also of one • will with •1he Father, "✓delight to do Thy will, 0 my God; Thy law is within. My heart." (PS 40:8) He -docs not withdraw from Ws Mission, and does not retract for one moment. , Then Moses and Elijah are seen in conversation with Him, speaking of, His "exodus" or "departure." Moses, the Giver of. the Law. the Intercessor (the one who prayed on behalf of his people), and Elijah, the Prophet and- Refprmer, both mediators of the Oki Covenant between God and man. What a strange situation • and conversation. Metamorphosis, contrasted by departure, Glory versus death. Did they have to urge Jesus to please accept the Cross to save the world? Certainly not? For they spoke of His. departure which Ile WAS TO ACCOMP- LISH at Jerusalem. This was de° termined, a Divine necessity. Christ is the end of the Law (Moses) and the fulfillment of Prophesy (Elijah). Both had ended their work, but were un- able -to finish it. Moses had led Israel to the border, blit notinto the....ep.:inind,,.. m),,,,.th other had given up under the juniper -tree, only to lead be- hind another prophet, 'imper- fect like himself. Bath of them had been mediators looking for- ward to "the Author and Fin- isher of ou ' salvation." There is yet a third contract. Peter wants to build tabernacles. Ere wants to celebrate the glory and hold one to it. He ;is, like manyChristians who .are_ satis- fied -when they themselves are saved, when they can sing, "0 that shall be, glory for ME." It is a terrible thing --to- beeso heavenly minded that you are no earthly good. So was Peter at that time,' he was• eiitirely unaware , of the demon -ridden boy at the foot of that mountain, let alone of mankind in the thraldom of Satan in this valley 0 The` Ooderieii Signal-', u 3ya ibrch iO Jai Foctt.:.....•ae or which we tall world. Because th"e story is so well known, and yet not known at all? Yet they have come to understand. Many years later John wrote, "We have seen His ,glory', glory as of the Only Son from the Father," and Peter, "We have seen His Majesty, when we were with Him -in the mountain," ` What does it mean for us? It beggars explanation and this is nowhere to be found in the Bible. Yet it places real facts before us. WE'RE BUYING • SEEDOATS.
