For all 1 know it may be a
good and necessary thing to ob-
serve Lent, that is if we under-
stand what it means: a season of
penitence and prayer. And if
this is understood then there
is no reason •s the world that it
should not ' . _ ' eld all year long.
For man stands in need of every:
day repentance and daily cleans-
ing.
Lent is a dangerous thing.
Because, asualready pointed out,
it may easily become a mere
show (rather pleasing to our-
selves instead of pleasing God),
but also because of the wrong
emphasis which is often placed
on what we do, or do. not do
instead on what Jesus • Christ

has done ONCE FOR ALL,,that
created Crisis and Conflict, ten-
sion and frustration sCich as Si-
mon Peter feed -at the . time
of the Transfiguration of Ch,rist.
Dr. , G. Campbell Morgan has,
said that there are seven times
of crisis to be seen in the life
of Christ, and the Trans1 gur-
ation is'one' of them. The story
of this event is most perplexing
and difficult eta understand.
'Teter did not know what .he
'said .on .this occasion. What
about ourselves? It defies all
explanation and calls us to won-
der and worship. "When I this
wonder contemplate, niy spirit
does in reverence wait."
Shortly before the Transfigur-
ation Peter had made the Great
Confession, "Thou (Jesus) art
the Christ!" This word was not
the product of human genius,
but Gochinspired. "Vo one can
say `Jesus is Lord' except by
the Holy Spirit." - But what
Peter took to mean nothing but
royalty and dory was to be
first of all a Cross, said Jesus.
And Peter rebelled. ' And not
only did Jesus rebuke Peter be-
cause of his satanic rebellion and
.u.ribeliref,,. bull. +.•:,made it -also_
very plain that the Cross was a
necessity for mans saIvation,
both His Cross to save the e world
and the cross of the disciple
as a proof and consequence of
that salvation. Strange words
inde.edh
A week later Jesus took Peter,
John and James with Him to the
mountain, the place of crisis.
For here begins Gethsemane,
here ie the_ -point of _no return:_
FTiseati and being forsaken by
God. Wire Jesus prays He be -
conies transformed or transfig-
ured (Gr. metamorphosed), all
Majesty, Glory 'and Purity; the
sinless Son. There is no bar-
rier between Him and God,
He is one with the Father. He
does not- have . to die in order
to go to heaven, to be with the
Father. tut He is also of one

will with •1he Father, "✓delight
to do Thy will, 0 my God; Thy
law is within. My heart." (PS
40:8) He -docs not withdraw from
Ws Mission, and does not retract
for one moment. ,
Then Moses and Elijah are
seen in conversation with Him,
speaking of, His "exodus" or
"departure." Moses, the Giver
of. the Law. the Intercessor (the
one who prayed on behalf of his
people), and Elijah, the Prophet
and- Refprmer, both mediators
of the Oki Covenant between
God and man. What a strange
situation • and conversation.
Metamorphosis, contrasted by
departure, Glory versus death.
Did they have to urge Jesus
to please accept the Cross to
save the world? Certainly not?
For they spoke of His. departure
which Ile WAS TO ACCOMP-
LISH at Jerusalem. This was de°
termined, a Divine necessity.
Christ is the end of the Law
(Moses) and the fulfillment of
Prophesy (Elijah). Both had
ended their work, but were un-
able -to finish it. Moses had
led Israel to the border, blit
notinto the....ep.:inind,,.. m),,,,.th
other had given up under the
juniper -tree, only to lead be-
hind another prophet, 'imper-
fect like himself. Bath of them
had been mediators looking for-
ward to "the Author and Fin-
isher of ou ' salvation."
There is yet a third contract.
Peter wants to build tabernacles.
Ere wants to celebrate the glory
and hold one to it. He ;is, like
manyChristians who .are_ satis-
fied -when they themselves are
saved, when they can sing, "0
that shall be, glory for ME."
It is a terrible thing --to- beeso
heavenly minded that you are no
earthly good. So was Peter
at that time,' he was• eiitirely
unaware , of the demon -ridden
boy at the foot of that mountain,
let alone of mankind in the
thraldom of Satan in this valley

in the time of crisis.. Does this
mean that you and I must also`
rub our eyes?. Because th"e
story is so well known, and yet
not known at all? Yet they
have come to understand. Many
years later John wrote, "We
have seen His ,glory', glory as of
the Only Son from the Father,"
and Peter, "We have seen His

What does it mean for us? It

nowhere to be found in the

before us.

'5. This is not "pie in . the .4{y,"
not something ""to keep the
baby sweet." On the contrary:
this is extremely practical for
it means a present task and
solemn duty It may be won-
derful for daily contemplation,
but -there is to be also daily
accomplishment. That very
word "metamorphosed" is
used ir1 the Bibb as an ex-
hortation for us m Rom. 12:
1, "Do, not be conformed to
this world, but be transformed
(metamorphosed) by ' the re-
newal of your mind, that you
may prove what is the will of
God, what is good and accept-
able and perfect." And "be-
we'
be-we' are being changed into
His likeness from one 'degree
'of glory to another; for this
• comes from the Lord who is
the Spirit" (II Cor: 3:18.) -
Thus. in spite of the strange,
mysterious event on the moun-
tain; and notwithstanding the
passing character- of the vision: -
there is the abiding: the Glory,
the Cross, Jesus alone, and
ther..ewith ,we too must go into-,
the -valley of -sin-and •sorrow,,
1. There is no glory for: any of
us save in the Cross of Jesus
Christ. Only in His death
on the Cross for our sins,
us nen Aus for our, sal
vation" is there hope.. Unless
we take that Cross- fully and
seriously we may not possibly
hope .for heaven. There is
no sucha thing as an auto-
matic promotion to heaven at
the time of death. He who
does not believe is already
condemned.
2. The_giory, the salvation which
Christ has,.,-ohtataed far any

And what 'God has ,prepared

3.•The. glory (eternal life) which

of puzzles and problems, of temp-
tations and even enmity, with
'the Cross that turns not back"e
yes, into the world ,full of con=
flicts where we must battle with
"the devil, the world, and our
own sinful flesh;" and YET in
the assurance -that although "it

pears we shall be like -Him, for
we shall see Him as Pte
"And' everyone - who thus
tian from the daily bearing of hopes in Him purifies himself as
his own cross, i.e. from self- He is pure." Anything shortaof
denial and service. Anct be this is short of Lent, in fact of
assured than that means no the tree Christian's life at any
less than a "via dolorosa," a time.
