established one of the most
successful insurance 'businesses
itn town,
George Turton can only be
described as a remarkable .man
.with -' a"determftration- that' tae'
carried him to the top despite
all setbacks.
Now, after ten years in the
insurance business he can look'
back at his list of achievements'
Which includes being in the top
30 of sorrne 300 salesmen who
represent his' company.
"People have always said
things can't be done," said Mr.
Turton,. "but I have shown them
otherwise."
Take for example the. lift he
built himself at his home'which
takes him in his wheelchair
down to the basement where he
has his own workshop.
"One day I went ddwn the
basement with all the material
1 needed and that night I rode
back up again," said Mr. Turton
who received help on the pro-
ject from his father and a
neighbor.
Fell From .Roof •
The story of George Turton's
struggle began in May of 1952
when he slipped from a roof,
sliding -down a °rafter and then
falling some eight feet to the
ground.
At the age of 22 he found
his back was broken and he was
paralyzed in ' both legs. He
spent more than four months
in Victoria Hospital, London,
ant then went to Lyndhurst
Lodge, a Toronto rehabilitation
centre ° for the Canadian Para-
plegic Association.
. It took him five months to
learn to cope with the program
"Of ""reMbilitati7i i"' "require"d-115.`
his injury.. He °had to learn
things like,dreR ing:him`self and
getting into befi.
