ON HOLDING THE. LINE
:With the first long, weekend of the summ,er coming up,
d like to take a little space in the column to pass along some
atistiies on the highway -accident picture in Ontario, and con-
atulate drivers for the remarkable showing made last year
holding the death rate down. The Bell's interest in safety
I believe, well known, and the fact that the Company op -
rates the largest fleet -of vehicles in- Canada makes road safety,
11 the mare important to us.
' According to figures released by the Canadian Highway
afety Council, Ontario highway accidents took 1,424 lives last
ear — three lives more than in 1963. Apart from, Newfound-
nd, which actually lowered the number of deaths, Ontario's
nerease of roughly one-fifth of one per cent is almost incred-
ble — especially when compared to • neighbouring Quebec and
anitoba, where deaths tragically increased 20 and 11 per
ent, respectively.
11 sincerely hope that as we take to the road this summer
e will not only continue to hold down the death rate,' but
ctually begin to pare it away as in Newfoundland. Our high-
vs.will•-becoune ..gaferand safer for all of us if each. one --
;ver, passenger,, pedestrian and cycl+;st mike `- vrll nrcept
continuing responsibility to see that they do so., Summed
up very simply, this means that Road Safety is everyone's r-
SPonsi+bility, and all the time. Right?

Ten years ago, the Bayfield
saw' f was built at a cost of
$20,000. The central school is
to cost $453,000.
The new school was approved
by the five -member township,
school board after study of a
report prepared by school in-
spectors, J G. Burrows, Exeter
and J. H. Kinkead, Goderich.
Parts o•f the report, claims
Brig. Clift, were "grossly in-
accurate" He said the report
ignored a suggestion that the
school, herebe expanded into
four rooms to be operated in
conjunction with the central
school.- '
Merton Merner, Rayfield, a
member of the township board
and a supporter of the expan-
sion of Bayfield school, read a
letter 'he said he received De-

He quoted Mr. Burrows as

PALMS SPRINGS WEEKEND
I wonder if Canadians would be So appreciative of the
SPrifig and summer if Canada had a warm climate all year
round? Well,: no matter, the fact is that we don't have, a
warm climate all year, round, and so we take as much advan-
tage of it as possiblewhile it's here. This doesn't only mean
trips and excursions and picnics and the like, but "outside
living" on the parch, patio, or under the family trees. And this
can sometimes present a problem beeapse "inside living" still
has to go on as well. For example, the telephone is probably
considered apart of "inside living'' by most people — perhaps
because it's more or less "tied down" by a wire. Yet there
are two solutions which let people enjoy as much "outside
living" as possible while still keeping in easy touch with friends.
One is the Bell Chime, which can be set to ring loud enough to
be heard outdoors (it ,also has a regular ring, plus a soft mus -
'cal tone that's perfect when a family member is resting). The
other is a portable extension with a weatherproof jack. What
would You do with an, o>.itdoor extension during the winter
>nanths? .._- Well, you take it back in with you and use it as
a regular extension! If you're interested, we'd be glad to tell
You mare about it — 'just give us a gall at our business office.
