Of this experi- ence he. wrote his Sunday. School back .fn Philadelphia: 1 remember especially on Christ- mas Eve, when I was standing in the old church at Bethlehem, close to the spot where Jesus was born, when the whole church was ringing heir after hour with the splendid hymns, of praise to God, how again and again it seemed as if I coup, (hear voices that I knew well, telling each other of the 1 V `Wonderful Night' of the ,Sav- ior's birth, ,as I had heard the year before; and 1 assure you I was glad to shut my ears for awhile and listen to -the more familiar strains that came wan- dering to me halfway round'the world." The.experien'ce remained with him, and• the strains haunted/ his memory. 'Two years later, back in America, he wrote a paem for his Sunday School, putting into verse the thoughts and memoriesof that ecstatic experience. . ;.rte ;mss- •. mom,;. m.'
