SHRIER ON SPORTS
This column has not appear,
ed lately but I felt that some
type of comment should be
made about the efforts of the
GDOI Vikings who Wednesday
afternoon of last 'week won
their Football Conference. cham-
pionship.
After a good deal of thought
Isdelt that no 'one could say it
better than did Coach Wayne
Horner at their victory dinner
a couple of hours after the de-
ciding game.
The following will not be the
words of yours truly but those
of a coach who played no small
part in ,the winning of this
ehlampionship. "

Never has this statement
been more true than. this year.
This season we were etintinual-

"You can be proud of the
fact that you are not back door
champions. Our defensive and
offensive records topped any
other in the league. This is ea-
pecially true of our defense.
'"‘In only one game this year
did our opposition pick up more
than seven first downs over the
entirer60 'minutes. Show me
e p ensive record than
that!
"Certainly this year was not
any bed of roses. We had o..ne
bad day when we lost to an
inferior team. , That same day
we lost John Pirie, the best
blocking halfback I have ever
had the privilege to coach and
one of the best I have ever
seen in high school football: I
-now thlt was a big disa,
''iliigtrt'rrrie,' the team and to
John. Not ready yet to play
football, he pleaded with me
Against my better judgment I
allowed it. I ,did not let him
play but he wanted to. This
is the kind of guts. that epitom-
izes every member of this
team.
"You rose to great heights

fronted with St. Marys. Ydu
realized you had to win or be
eliminated from the ,playoffs.

Thus ended Coach Horne'r re-
marks. •
Coach Earner also paid trib.
ute to the mothers who travel-
led around the country to cheer
their boys on to victory and
who also staged the big victory
hanquet, These mothers I feel
i'iould be mentioned by name.
They are Mrs. Williamson, Mrs.

In 1914, Kaiser Willie:hi used
thoie wurds to describe the

It was flung under his flying
skates at Sudbury Arena on
December 5, 1958. 'He was

when he skated over a piece of

career of the 21 -year-old • left

close he had come .to a pro-
