HYACINTHS INDOORS
Some people do; some don't.
Some van; some can't. Never-
theless, with unfailing regular-
ity, at this season, 'soap,:one
conw..s up with a sure-fire meth-
od of growing hyacinths in-
doors. :?There must be as many
methods for this horticultural
,exercise as there are for plant-
ing rose bushes. It is remin-
iscent. of 'a glorious passage
l'ru,u that skit "Beyond the

prefer the 'ewin. For myself
I'm a 'ack and 'ew man." Ap-
propriately there is the hack

Having potted the bulbs you
bury the pot ou,tdodrs in a flow-
er bell. By the: time you re-
member it again, the pot is
frozen solid in 'the ground.
'Ackin -and 'ewin is then under-
taken with disastrous results to
the pot, the bulbs and yomr
temper, not to mention your
health. • ,

Another way to achieve the

form says: Have their wives

Just as Mrs. Beeton's recipe
for' Jugged Hare begins: First
catch your hee, so, in the vern-
acular of horticulture, first
buy extra select, tap size, 19
centimetre or over, bulbs which
are recommended far forcing.

you. must produce for success.

not too much water while the

roots are growing in November

and hyacinths are especially,
,,uscepti•ble to ' decay.
The soil mixture should be
two parts sandy loam; no trou-
ble with that hereabouts.. One
part compost or peat moss and
one part sand, all by volume.
Well mix and sift these in-
gredients through a' half inch
screen. and ad/ a cup' of bone-
nrcal to each bushel of the mix-
ture. The pots may be six to
eight, inches in diameter, clay
or plastic, shallow or deep,
though deep are preferred be-
cause you can get in two inches
of pebbles or ;crocks in the bot-
tom, depending o.n the pot, for
drains -e. 'Fill the pot half full
of the -flux ore an• se in one
to three bulbs, depending , on
the pot size, but do not crowd;
leave plenty of room for root
growth. The bulbs gq in with
the rounded bottom down. Cover
with the mixture. so that the
noses of the btilbs are a half
inch below the surface. Water
well and add more mixture if
required.

pear above the soil. This is
the time to bring the pots in-
side into a 60 degree F. climate
where .they are in the light but
not sunlight. Several week.'
later the buds should show in
the centre of the leaves. It is
time to up the temperatur"e_ to
70°F, but keep them still out
of sunlight. Once in the house,
water regularly, every day, un-
til and through blooming time,
Clip the blooms when they
fade and when all are gone con-
tinue to water the leaves in a
sunny window, until they die
down. Planted outside later
on, when no hacking or hewing
is required, the bulbs will re-
but will never ,bloom as well
as they did in the hoose.
Heat And Light
Growing hyacinths in water,
supporting the bulb in a stand-
ard hyacinth vase, adds the
additional requirement of dark-
ness as well as coolth to force
srjfficient root growth. 1f you
can devise means to satisfy the
double requi,renent, this meth-
od has the advantage that the
root 'growth can be seen and
gauged for sufficiency. Once
again, bring the vases gradu-
ally into the heat and light but
eschew sunlight and top up'the
water in the vase as and when
required,

40 cents -each, but beware of
mieing the very early ones with
the late varieties. To be on the
safe side, do• not mix the pol-
o'rs in any pot. Do not try to
force the bulbs a second sea -
new themselves in a,year or so son either. For Christmas bloom
plant speciar varieties: Rosalie;
—pink. The White Roman or
the multiflora hyacinths.

Too old to buy insurance?
.:r
risk;!,
,Being over 65 is no barrier to the 'purchase of new
life instirance. And for many people in their sixties
or seventies it can be a very wise "buy."
Here's an example. Aman age 75 has a substantial
number of investments. At death, estate taxes will
have to be paid. To raise the cash, income-producing
assets have to be sold, often with severe losses t the
beneficiaries. Lifeinsurance can'prevent this loss by
providing the necessary'cash.
