The 5,oiution: 'Oniy Your Hairdresser KnowsBest!'
AIR
The profile of a hair-ilt-sing
controversy t/eok sheep before
town council Friday night.
Involved is the claim by down-
town Goderich hairdressers that
women giving "hair -do's" in
private homes ought to be pro-
hibitd from doing so.
ePresenting the downtowners'
rewpoint was Erie Johnstone,
RAISING ISSUE'
proprietor of Verna's Beauty
Salon.
In a letter to the mayor and
council, Mr. Johnstone purport-
ed to. be speaking for Verna's
and five other Godericli hair-
dressers, including Heather
Beauty Saon,- Red's Beauty
Salon, Mai -Dee Bauty Salon,
Modern Beauty salon and Jean's
Beauty Saon.
The gist of Mr. Johntene's
presentation was that hair -do's
given in private homes not only
violate the existing zoning by-
laws but, provide unfair com-
petition to these hairdressers
located in arees. cdhamercially
'oiled for such a purpose:IT
Hairdresser Johnstone, form-
*.er president of the Huron Coun-
ty Hairdressers Ass.ociation, in
his posentation- before council
laid a battery a charges pretty
apt to trigger a "friz reaction"
among even the most moderate
of homebased hairdressers.
Cut -Rate Prices
Mr. Johnstone suggested that
"here in the town of Goderich

tised and in most eases unlic-
ensed working their dwell-
ings — basments, leitchens,
front -rooms.
In a formal letter submitted
the mayor and Councillors as a
prelude (o his personal appear-
ance in council chambers, Mr.
Johnstone preseed his point.

Kiames Names
He allged: ". . . I respectfully
submit the-fellowing names and
addresses of people by the fact
that they are paying business
taxes on their property, admit
they are doing business—which,
I might add, are all in residen-

The last narieed is peddling her

which I believe is another in-

This parting shot: "There
may be other e that are un-

all thatis necessary to give you

after this parting shot:
However, we are most for-
tunate in having a zoning law
here in Godrich, which was
passed in 1958 to protect against
such opposition being permit-
ted. But this has not been en-
forced to date.
"So, therefore Your Worship,
I respecrfully request that you
direct that the 0hif of Police
enforce thistlaw ashe would
any other bylaw."
Formal Letter
Excerpts from Mr. John
tone's formal letter to. council:
'I am sure that we are all
aware al the fact that there is
a bylaw governing Zoning in
the Town of Gederich, which
I believe was e'assed with the
idea in mind that business' and
industry would ' be carribd out
in locations most advantageous
to all concelned. However,

matter we have under study."
