FLOWERS\AND FLOWER
" SHOWS
We have just concluded a
successful flower show'. I do
not know how-pany that makes
in all, nor do I remember when
- the Goderich Horticultural So-
ciety had its first show, but the,
filktiny village of Ditchling in East
Sussex is having its 143rd on
Saturday, July 18th. Its so-
ciety was a going concern about
the time that Dr. Duniop was
hacking out the Huron trail,
therefore. And since I have a
ohrewd suspicion that the Eng-

than we are, it is not surpris-

Perhaps because, of the low
standard or livelihood in those
days the society favored fruits
as well. as flowers and in fact
c a 11 e d 'itself the Ditchling
Gooseberry and Currant Society,
which is just what the early
societies in- Huron did. At its
sepon.d.ematstilavg a -list of 84
--jibigible subscribers —al —raft
, shillings and six pence per year
was compiled, but few appear
to have paid their dues. At a

the prizes offered seem bounti-
ful. 1 'For 'the 1? heayiest red
gooseberries the prize was 19
-shillings. For the 12 ,
bunches of red- currants five
shillings. There were classes
for white and black cherries,
apples, strawberries, raspber-
ries, melons, "plumbs:" and
grapes grown in the open.
The flower classes were for
the best carnation with a white
ground, for stocks, roses, dah-
lias and geraniums and a "sold
collation at 2s- 3d each will be
provided for members and visit-

For some years after, anyone
who had a silver epergne for a

sweet pea's and gypsophila stood
a good thance of winning as
the judges favored this com-

the village rebelled. ,The ar-

away from the official judges.
Instead all women who entered

for the numbered exhibit they
liked best. At the count it
was found, that a man had won.
