TRICKY TRANSLATIONS
'translating nantei given to
places and things by North Am-
erican Indiaits can sometimes
be a tricky business. For ex-
ample, the town of NIamaro-
neck, a residential suburb 20
miles east of New YO* City,
was originally named by the
Indians. The name,, depe*ncling
on which translation yoti ie-
cept, means "He assembles the
people" or "Where the salt
waters meet the fresh."
again. They stay at home on
chain or leash, to bark behind
a wirey gate, to stay at home ill
to bark and pace.
