Or so I thought Sunday when
I took, the car 'out for an airing,
Monday, things were back to
normal -with a light frozen
crusting of slush over every-
thing.
Perhaps I'm getting anxious

for spring, for the time'when
can get back to sailing,
back to some bass fishing,
back to lazing around and
goofing off for a weekend and
doing nothing:
I took the car down the
old dirt sideroad ,y fio Me -
water Beach Sunday .to see
how the cottages came thr-
ough' they, winter. The road
m was a mudhote path that trap.
times. And 1 wondered what
and why I was doing this.
But the cottages are still
there, everything' quiet, desert-
ed, sitting. A gaggle of boys
.chattered and skipped stones
far down • the beach. Up on
the I3luewater ledge it was alone
with the summer homes. ,
I got out and stepped with
rubberless shoes down into •the
soft ooze of mud and grass and
floating. water. The -clear car
was no more.
I sang gtiietly to myself
swinging my arms about until I
felt chilly and redid the buttons
on my winter c.eat. The cot-
tages -with unpainted shutters
sat 'mute. And 1 sat down on a
•low rock, cracked stiff muscles
in my knees, sat mute and un-
comfortable and wondered
what to do next.
1' watched for birds • and
there were 'none. Bare brown
lines of branches warted aver-

Everything around me
seemed strangely out'of place. ,
The cottages seemed, to no

My rack was really becom-
ing quite clammy and the "seat
of -my pants was getting wet.
I tip -toed through the it u d
back to ' the. car, turned the
radio on and immediately turn-
ed it .off again, a sacrilege.
I wished I hadn't because the
fuzzy }Hood was all broken,
gone. A half hour later I• went'
home.. -
I left the shuttered cottages
to° their peace and hominess
and fought.my way up the mud -
hole path to the highway. U'
