The Goderich Signal-Star, 1963-10-24, Page 10This fi derirh Signal -Star, $11ra slay, October 24th, 1963 Siftos-Mold=-Initial Pradi Under Noted Coach, J. Mavety The 11.64 edition of Gode- rich Siftos held their initial workout at Goderich ,arena Tuesday night with 25 asphiants vieing for positions. The open- ing practice was under the cap- able guidance of Joe Mavety expected to .be this year's coach. 1Mayety may, be remembered by some as a player for the old Kist Canadians of Stratford. Others niay remember him for his success as a coach with the St. Mary's Lincolns. Under his capable guidance the Lincolns went to the Ontario Junior "B" .finals twice, only to be beaten out by St. Mike's ofie year and Owen Sound on the other oc- casion. Complete details have not as yet been worked out with Mavety although, the Booster Club expects to finalize everything within the next few days. Among those ,going through their paces. for _Coach Mavety were: Ray Bouchard of Mon- treal, who is a 17 -year-old de- feneeman and likely to be wear- ing the Hamilton uniform next year; Rick Hirtle, another good prospective defenceman; Vern Skeoch, who is attending OAC but is going to play for the Siftos. He will make another defensive choice. A couple of • other „_...defence prospects are expected in canip within the Possibles for the starting for- ward lineup are: Allan Hager- man who led the Hamilton June for ."B" team in scoring last year with 32 goals; Wayne Duf- " fett of Kirkland Lake who was the second top scorer in his league last -year. (The lad who beat him . out is this year play- ing with the Montreal Junior Canadiens); JerryyMooney, who' was not out TuesdaEy night due to a strep throat but Jerry led the Border City Junior League last year with 55 goals; Bruce Cooper .of Clinton is oin - camp' and last year Bruce scored 48 goals for the Clinton Juveniles. WINTER Is - COMING Make ,Sure All Of Your Winter Garments Are Clean and • ,, Wear BLUEWATER CLEANERS 324-8231 Other good prospects who performed On Tuesday are David Hedgcoe from Clarkson University in. New. York; Jack Primea,n, and;-BtYW I'hil, lips from, Verdun, Rick Hirtle. from Nor- anda, goalie Wayne Sutherland, Gary Parsons from Exeter along with Goderich_ natives Ray Black, Bob Graham, Bill Wil- kinson, John. Arthur, Steve Snell, Brian Carroll and Den- nis Williamson. More players are expected to arrive daily and this should swell the list of likely candid- ates to 30 or 35 hockey players. The thing - that was notice- able to the railbirds who were on hand far the initial practice was the overall size ofthe can- didates. It would appear from first glance that the average weight of this year's aggrega- tion should outstrip that of last year. Many of the boys showed more desire in _tie initai..we,* out than did last year's squad at the same point. The Booster Club feela satis- fied with the import situation and they feel that the fate of the Siftos ,this year will rest in the hands of local players. "If the local boys come through with a good season" stated Jack Evans, "then we will have a very strong contending club." The Siftos will work out nihtlyWuntil their opening game ental Illness, Problem Is Discussed. By Clergy A one -day session for clergy, discussipg the various aspects. of mental illness, was held at the new Ontario Hospital, Gode- rich, on Monday. The session began at 9 a.m, and lasted until 8.36 p.m. Sponsored by the Goderich Ministerial Association, and through • the` kind co-operation of pr. J. Hagan, Superintendent, it proved to be of great value to the "ministers of this area. The Institute Was directed by the Rev. Dr. A. MacLachlan, hospital chaplain, at the Ham- ilton Ontario Hospital. Through various films, cases. of mental illness were analyzed .t o d through discussion, the ister$ were alerted to look for signs when, where and how help may be offered. Duly re- pentant, we looked in The Sig-. naDStar of October 17th, and what do we see—a fine article by Gail Sully plus a great, big advertisement. Not .to labor a point, we are in favor of longer holidays. Rehearsals for "Salad Days" are progressing well. With the opening night in three weeks, the cast seems well organized, some of the sets are painted, and the costume department is in full swing. On Friday night, the 18th, a rehearsal was held at MacKay Hall, with Mr. John Burton in charge, and on Sun- day afternoon, the 20th, Mr: Lorne Dotterer had the whole chorus assembled for the first I time. We can only say tha Awe thinkthe. play is great fun, the music is gay and tuneful and the parts are well taken. Barbara McKee has replaced Joan Crawford as the lead be- cause of the latter's Illness, and she was rehearsing with Ted Avis the lovely song "We said we'd never look back." The set for this is the dreaming spires of Oxford, very well painted by Martha. Rathburn. We were a little surprised to find Tim, his Uncle Clam and Fosdyke, his attache, rehears- ing their "Hush Hush" song apparently happily oblivious to the fact that Uncle Clam's head was neatly under the hair -dryer painted ''on the screens used d in the beauty parlor scene.
