happy alliance of talent.
"Salad Days" will be follow-

"The Chalk Garden," a highly
controversial play to be direct-

LETTER FROM CHICAGO
Letters to The,Signal-Star
from residents of Goderieb
show their ,interest and concern
about Ggderieh's dog and. cat
problems.
One of the more recent ones
was from -Mrs. Elizabeth Mac-
Lean Redding of Chicago,. Il-
linois, in which she states:. -
"I nave • been quite interested
in the tying up dogs move-
ment in Goderich. I have al-
ways understood that tying up
dogs makes fierce dogs. Il
people like dogs they- ouid
make dog -runs in their back-
yards and have a dog house.
Ni one should have a dog un-
less they are willing to take
care 'of them. I don't have a
dog bcicause I live in an apart-
ment but I do think that dogs
are wonderful animals and I
donot like to see therm abused."
Mrs.Reddingnciosed a
newspaper clipping of a news
item from Bridgeport, Connec-
ticut, - which read in part as
folows: Fifty dogs and a cat
received a priest's blessings
without a bark, whimper, or
meow today at an Episcopalian
church service marking the
feast of St, Francis,
One by one,- animals and
their owners marched toward
the communion rail, where the
Rev. Delmar S. Markle awaited
them. Father Markle, rector of
St. George's Church, placed his
hands on the animals' heads
and prayed:
'i.,. --r? Lorrl his thy_net
and -grant that he may always
be a joy to -the `iuman com-
panion."

"There

barks, no growls, no disorder.
It was a very quiet, dignified
service," he said..
Father Markle sat on the step
in front of the communion rail
and gently patted the creatures
on the chest before lifting his
hand • over their heads.
The purpose of the service,
he.. said, was to teaeh --t hat--al-
creatures were made ; by:. God
and that we should treat all
living things with respect."
Father Markle said he would
like to make the service an
annual event, "God willing. `r
''Some people will probably :s
think I'm nuts," he added.

news and enable you to keep
that news with you as long as

actress June Havoc, attended
the service the -day after the
feast of St Francis, patron saint
of • the animal kingdom. Miss
Havoc, who called the ceremony
"a beautiful"one," represented
an animal welfare organization.
"Never has there been a more
distinguished congregation in
this c`hurch," Father Markle, a
priest for 37 years, remarked
jokingly as he la5oked down the
aisle at rows of poodles, boxers,
collies, and many mongrels.
