aIth Minister Explains How
bies Threatens human Beings
IV II'
latthew 13. Dymond, M,D.,
health Minister. for Ontario.
Rabies is an infecti.qus dis-
ease which attacks the wildlife
an Ontario and may .at times
.assume serious proportions. It
may affect any 'warm blooded
animal and may be, contracted
by humans. When this happens
it is often fatal. Your Ontario
Department of Health suggests
that through knowledge and
understanding of the danger,
unnecessary risks may be
avoided.
In This .Area
In Ontario' rabies is spread
principally by the red fox, al -
,though other wild animals,
skunks, bats, may become in-
volved, and domestic animals
such as dogs, cats, cattle, horses.
It is spread from one animal to
another through the saliva, The
virus may 'be present, in other
tissues of the body, but it Can-
-not. be - transmitted except
trough the broken skin, hence
the danger from animal bites.
The invubatiori period, that
is from the time the virus en-
ters the body, until the appear-
ance of symptoms of the dis-
ease, varies from as short a time
as two to three weeks, to longer
than six months. The period
of infectivity is the most im-
portant, that is the time during
which the virus may be spread
in the saliva. This may last
from four or five days before
the sysnmoms of rabies appear,
until the death of the animal.
There are two types of rabies,
but both types show a change
in disposition and behaviour of
the anima'. Furiout rabies is
particularly marked by the per-
iod of great excitement which
sets i,p after two or three days,
• causing the animal to run about
rr a wild, aimlessmanner, and,
fo attack and bite anything in
its path. Paralysis of the limbs
sets in and the animal finally
betomes„unconscious and dies.
Dumb rabies is marked by early
nervous symptoms, but without
free Methodist'.
