Big nwwo from the Young
Canada Week committee this
week is that Bob, Hope will be
attending the tourney. We are
not sure what qday he will be
here but he -undoubtedly
add something to this big event.
The Sarnia Indian Reserve
has a team entered and they are
•obviously proud of the fact that
they are Indians and well they
might be, as they have all been
listed as such.

A young lad by the name of
.John Wigle of Byron will be in
action this year. John has a
distinguished local connection
as his grandfather, the late E.
R. Wigle, was mayor of Gode
rich, a local *drug ;ist and an
MPP for lluron.
The fervor :end enthusiasm of
Young Canada Week has caught
on in Lynn Lalt••, Manitoha. This
community has only 1;500 re :i-
dents and the team has raivt'd l
$1,400. This is the amount of
money it will cost the team for
transportation alone.
,Yes, the big event is only a
week away. Have ydu - phoned
yet to make arrangements to
accept billets? If not, do it
now! Your co-operation will be
much appreciated. The num-
bers to call are '881.1, 8234 or
8018.
All winter long we have' been
harping on the theme of fan
support at minor hockeyF>,games.
Well sport fans, this Friday
and. ,Saturday you, will have a
chance to redeem yourselves
and atone for your apathy.
On Friday starting at 6 p.m.
• the six Squirt teams will be play-
ing off for -the various league
trophies... '.Elsewhere ' on- this-
page
his page you will find an advertise-
ment giving you .complete de-
tails. • These youngsters really
give it all they have -and if they
do it before a large crowd they
will be tickled pink. To wind
up. the evening the „Legion
Squirt All -Stars will be playing
against Port Huron. These will
be the last Squirt games of the
season. Why. not give the kids
a break?
To give you a taste,of things
to come, the Pee Wees will be
facing off Saturday at 1 p.m.
and they also, will be fighting
it out for trophies.
We tell yo rthatt you will see
good hockey from "these young-
sters
oungsters and this is no idle boast.-
For
oast..For example, it took three
Weeks and three overtime per-
iods to decide who would ap-
pear against MacDonald Marine
for the league championship.
The games we mention were
between Goderich Motors' Fords
and Cooper Mercury Sales. The
first -game ended in a 2-2 tie.
The. second game was 0-0 and
after regulation time in" the
third game they were again
deadlocked 0-0. The game had
to be decided so they went into
overtime. After two overtime
p: riods and with only 30 sec-
onds remaining in the third
overtime period, Wayne Draper
of Cooper Mercury Sales se>tgred
the deciding goal. 'Had young
Mr. Draper not scored, a fourth
game would have been neces-
sary as after regulation time
and three overtime periods a
game must be called a draw.
If this doesn't sound like excit-
ing hockey, we miss our guess.
Incidentally, MacDonald Marine
and Cooper Mercury Sales will
face off for the championship at
3' p.m. ori Saturday.
It is too bad that the game
w•hicfi took place last Friday
night between the Intermediates
end the Juveniles wasn't pub-
licizf'd. We feel quite sure that
many people would have got
a great deal of enjoyment out
of seeing these local youngsters
play against the Intermediates.
The game ended 10-5 in favor of
the Intermediates.
The game of soccer is mush-
rooming all across Canada and
Goderiis- no exception to the
trend. Last year we fielded
one team which won the_league
championship.. This 'year it
would appear as though Gode-
rich will boast two and pos-
sibly 'three soccer teams, to
make a six or seven team lea-
gue.
Sandy Profit has informed us
that the teams have- been work-
ing out' for three months in
-the Victor -Lauriston'` gymrias-'
ium,and. by _tlie_._time,ihey. move
into their schedule they will be
in top shape.

-'The chasers of the little white
pill were out in force last Sat-
urday and Sunday Seven of
the holes at the Maitland Golf
Club are in pretty good shape
and it would appear as though
the club is in for a fine season.
There were many complain-
ing last year because there was
no one around to give • them
lessons and straighten out some
of their 'many new and recur-
ring ills. The club is proud to.
announce that this -year they
:have retained Bill Breen as
pro -manager. Bill is not only
a fine golfer in his awn right
but has also ruii' i successful
golf school in Toronto for the
past two winters.- We are sure
he will• be happy to give you
a lesson or two and i it will.
undoubtedlly improve your
game.
