His practice left him time for
other activities. The Canada
Directory for 1851 shows "M.
Hamilton" as deputy clerk of
the Crown. Clerk of the peace
at the time was the Daniel Liz -
ars whom Hamilton had rescued
from the schooner Rob .Roy 18
years earlier. The doctor dab-
bled in real estate, for with
George Brown, Jr., he acquired
Lots 25 and 26 in Concession 1,
Goderich Township in 1848, and
earlier the Canada Company
had granted him Lot t4 in Con-
cession C, which appears to
have been land west of the
present new separate school on
Bennett street.
Indeed, pr. Hamilton was one
of a small group of gentlemen
who pretty well ran things.
When Capt. Alexander Mac-
Gregor (he of the schooner Rob
Roy), made a success of the
Main Station island hsheries
and had a contract to supply a
Detroit company with a mini-
mum of 3,000 barrels of fish
annually, envy arose among his
fellow townsmen of Goderich.
They had the ear of the govern-
ment and represented that
United States interests were
getting undue advantage in an
exclusive contract, 4s a result,
a lease was granted conferring
the sole right of fishing at the
islands upon a company includ-
ing Dr. Hamilton, Dr. William
Dunlop and W. S. Gooding.

Accident Vaccine?
WELL, NOT EXACTLY. Ten years
ago, polio was a major killer of youth;
today, vaccine has made the disease a
comparative rarity. But, • even when
polio was'. clt iIrting lives by the hun-

more people under 25 than any other
single cause of death—and they still arc.
Do we have an acident vaccine?
No. People- can't be vaccinated
against accidents, but the toll can be
reduced through the teaching of cor-
