Those of you who only sup-

losing out on a lot of fine hock-

would rarely see better hockey

From the- standpoint of indi-

playing fine hockey. but there
are a few that really deserve
some accolades thrown in their
direction.

of feeds is a new development
not foreseen when the old Act_
was drafted. The control per-
mits farrhers to obtain these
special feeds provided they
meet the same standard requir-

Caution to Farmers
Similarly, the Act makes it
illegal to sell feeds such as hay

NEW FEEDS ACT PACES
MODERNIZED INDUSTRY
Canada's new Feeds Act and
regulations went into effect
October 1.
Although the general author-
ity provided by the Act is much
the sante as that under the old
Feeding Stuffs Act of 1937,,
there are a number of amend-
ments designed to meet new
technological developments in
the formulation and handling of
feed and the better, understand-
ing of the nutritional require-
ments of farm animals.
Regulations on labelling no
longer require that ingreaients
be listed for registered feeds
provided that the label contains
a statement that the ingredients
are ones named in the certific-
ate of registration. A detailed
list of the ingredients will still
be available from the manufac-
turer on request. ..
Omitting the ingredient list
will enable the directionss -for
use and cautions for medicated
feeds to be placed prominently
on the label. It also eases the
way for the development of
linear programming of feeds
and the marketing of feeds in
bulk.
Linear Programming
Linear programming; involv-
ing the use of modern comput-
ers, is the development of a feed
formula giving the desired nu-
tritional 'value at the lowest
cost. This enables the manu-
facturer to take advantage of
the frequent variations in prices
of the wide range of ingredients
that go into feed 'by making
changes in the formula. It
would be impractical to record
frequent alteratiohs on the
label. Whatever the ingredi-
ents, however, • the essential
feeding value and guarantee of
protein. fat and fibre remain•
mineral standards as a °regular
mineral feed.
Restrictions on the sake of
trace -mineral -vitamin feeds 'are
modified but still require that
adequate directions and cautions
be givenon the label.
Vitamin mixtures, as well as
mineral -vitamin and trace -min-
eral -vitamin mixtures, are also
subject tp registration under
the new Act.
The new Feeds Act has
strengthened the powers of
Plant Products Division Inspec-
tors who now have the auth-
ority to require persons selling
or importing feed to produce
structions, shipping bills, ,bills
of lading and other documents
and papers pertaining to the
sale of feeds.

The Cxoderich goal came 'on a

Goderich had been swarming
