HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1962-12-06, Page 17Had an inteesting day in
the city on Saturday. Met an
old friend I hadn't seen in
years, took a long look at a
011
lady with no clothes on and
was mistaken for a wealthy ex-
ecutive by several Waiters, a
cab driver and an art dealer.
110
•
• -It all came about because of
my new winter outfit. In the
clothes department, I had been
Canada's last holdout against
inflation. Ever since the end
of World War I1, I had been
waiting for the price of men's
clothing to drop back to a
sensible level, so that I could
buy an aovercoat.
:F :ie
Not that I haven't had an
overcoat in all those years. I've
had several, each of them look-
ing like something the Salva-
tion Army had refused to a.:
cept.
x:
When 1 came -home from over-
seas in '45, I had no overcoat,
and my old air force trenchcoat
was held together by willpower
and a few discreet safety pins.
One day it fell apart, literally.
A large lady who had been
sitting beside me on a street-
car, got up and walked away
with half my coat dangling
from her purse, which had
-caught in one of the rents.
My landlady of the day came
to the rescue. A widow, she
presented me with her late hus-
band's 1928 modil overcoat. A
six-footer, he hAd filled it out
nicely with his 220' pounds: A
five-eighter, weighing. in -at-a
solid 137, I had room for z
small family in there with me.
But it was a nice gesture, so -
I wore it, looking . as though
every day were Hallowe'en.
:r.
That one was swiped at a
New Year's Eve party. It's the
only time anything good has
happened to tie at one of those
affairs. Luckily, a few days,
later, i met an old flying pal
who had • gone a bit alcoholic
and had two overcoats. 1' got
his second-best. for $8.50. It
lasted for a couple of years
until we got a pup.
* *
After the beast had been
thoroughly trained, and hada
ruined every old blanket in the
house during the process, I 'let
him sleep on my overcoat,- just
for one night, until we rounded
some more bedding for him
Apparently nobody had told him
that he was thoroughly.' trained.
..* *
M
to mo
was given
My last coat
by an,uncle. It just looked like
somebody's uncle's overcoat,
and 1 just looked like some-
body's uncle in it.
The other day, sick of look-
ing seedy, I hauled down the
flag of resistance and...hied me
to a gents' emporium. It didn't
help much to discover that those
sombre rags known as • men's
overcoats are about three times
as much as they were in 1945.
• * *
However, I -plunged. The
works. Imported, latest style,
British tailoring. The price
-staggered me, but the modesty
of my down isayrnaii rather
staggered the clerk. Then, on
some mad.whim, 1 picked up a
hat, an item I've never owned,
and clasped it on.
I looked in the mirror. Don't
ever tell me again that clothes
doa't make the man. The bag
gy-kneed teacher had been re-
-plac'ed by •a baggy -eyed execu-
tive. The down -at -heels col-
umnist had given way to a well
`heeled stockbroker. The only
give-awayf<vas below the knees.
'There were the same .old shape-
s shoes, with the broken
lay 's tied in granny knots
'Ott:"twise, a veritable whiskey
ad i:- 'del.
And that's bow I came to bo
standing in this art ,gallery'
the city Ton Saturday, gazing at
this nude painting. Judiciously.
Racking a bit on the heels
Pursing the mouth4thoughtfuliy.
Squinting carefully • with the
head cocked on one side. I,
figured that ,was what a man
of distinction would be doing
while he waited for his wite.'
The
Diesman
hovered dis-
creetly. Asked him how much
it was: He said seven -fifty. Told
him I'd take it. He wanted , to
know if I'd like a cheque form.
Told him I'd pay cash. Pulled
out a ten-spot. Simultaneously
discovered that he meant seven
hundred and fifty and that my
wife was standing two feett,
behind me.
* * • !:
I was still trying to convince
her that 1 was interested only
in the remarkable tone of the
painting, when we ran into old
John Meisel. Hadn't seen him
since the days when the mob
used to arrive at our place with
a case of suds, a salami, a guitar
and a number of ridiculous but
refreshing ideas. He's a uni-
versity professor now.
*
What did we talk' about? Old
times? Our teaching jobs? World
affairs? The new book • he's
written? Nope. He has squirrels
in his attic too, and we spent
a happy and profitless two-hour
lunch discussing means of• elirn'
inating the little brute without
being cruel. \
1: *
An interesting day. nd all
because 1_ bought so a new
winter outerwear. It's the first
time my wife has let me go to
the city in the winter for four
years.
We have the Greek's to thank
for our habit of reading from
left to right. The alphabet was'
originated by the Asia Minor
residents called the Phoenicians
and when it was adopted by the
-Greeks, it was written first .from
right to left, and later, froth
'right to 1'eit and left to right in
alternate lines. It was not writ-
ten consistently from left to
right until about 500 B.C.
