When. any great sports spec
tache- ends there . is always a
great deal of second guessing
and for the die-hard fan it
will go on to the 'next season.
In. our estimation 'there were
.two key plays in the final World
Series game- , Tresh made one
of them when he speared the
ball off Willie Mays' bat in the
seventh inning, Willie would
have scored .Qrn;. Cepeda's triple.
The other we c ;I1ed as the win
ning, run at the time. It was
obviously a pre -determined play
as there was no hesitation when
the Giants went for the double
play instead of trying to cut
Skowron off at the plate.
To us it is hard to under-
stand why a ball club wound
let a min be scored .),when up
and until that time they hadn
got a hit off the pitcher who
was .opposing them. When a
pitcher is that sharp for half
the ball game you can rest as
sured that he isn't going to
weaken much, especially in
world series play, and the final
game to boot.
This is so much second guess
ing, of course, and anyone could
be 'the greatest coach in the
world if he could replay some
things over again if he knew
what the final outcome would
be. But what makes yours truly.
Mad- is that those (censored)
Yankees won another World
Series.
- So baseball is wound 'up for
another summer and an official
"30" has been written to the,
local golf) story also..
The 'Maitland Golf Club._held
.its..closing tournament on Sun-
day with the following' results.
•,The Maitland Trophy, which
goes to the woman with the
slowest net score for the day,
was won by IVtary Rouse. 13ev
Wright' was runner up. The
Ellis Trophy was won by Jack
Murton with Charles- -laltol
the runnel; -up spot. This tro-
phy Is also for the lowest net
score for the day.
The Gerrard Trophy for lite
winner of the Mixed Two Bali
was won by Maxine Martin and
Vic Morrow. Mary Rouse and
Bill Lumby were second best in
this competition.
So the summer is dead as far
as .summer sports are concerned
and tonight- the activities • of
winter get under way. Jack
'Evans will have, his Siftos out
for their first workout. Inciden'
tally, if anyone is interested in
trying out for the team he
is invited to be on hand and
ready to go on the ire by 8 p.m.
Last year we got on the
backs of the Arena Commission
for not having the ice in soontr
so the boys could get into shape
before they play their first
game. Not only do they have
to get in shape but they have
to get to know each. other as
far as working together as a
unit. A year later we arti
again prone to question the
lateness .of ice installation. Un
doubtedly there are reasons and
perhaps they are valid ones.
From the angle of a hockey en-
thusiast, however, it is difficult
to see how it is humanly pos-
sible for anyone to get, a !team
working together in two _weeks'
time:- This, is what. Jack Evans
has to do and this is what it
is, impossible for °him to ' do.
Yet, loeal hockey fans are going
to assess the worth of the teain
on their- first few outings and
it goes without saying that this
isn't cricket. In our estimation,
you won't be able to assess the
worth of the 1962-63 edition
of the.Siftos until they' have
played a • half dozen games.
If you turn thumbs down on
them and quit attending games
before that time you are, to say
the least, beirrg totally- unfair
and unsportsmanlike.
On the other side of the
ledger, however, Goderich fans
will not accept,. nor should they
rrylttirg- lessthan-gin•
all out effort on the part of the
boys who finally make the team.
Last year we were forced to
accept some pretty weak efforts
from some members 0,0 the
,quad and it hurt gate receipts
for a few games after. A skat-
ing and hdstling team will be.
a winning team and any player
who thinks that he cu, sneak
by with laying off on'°the odd
game is' not wanted in Gbde-
rich. For that muter he is not
wanted by any hockey team in
the country. It happens period-
ically that a boy will leave home
and come to another town with
the mistaken impression that he
is a big hockey hero. He can
be a hero as long as he keeps
putting ogti' everything he has.
We ask 'you to remember that
ou are the hockey fans' darl-
ing up and until your first lack
lustre game for a fan's memory
is very short. So give it all
you got, boys, and local fans
will be with you.

Paradoxically, there was -nn
