Poultry market report froM
Canada Department of Agricul-
ture Poultry 'Division says:
Most major Canadian poultry'
markets continued steady, ex-
gept for the odd minor price
revision for certain kinds and
wek,hts- at -widely •
points. On the live market,
some Toronto dealers lowered
their paying prige one centfor
broilers and light weight chick-
ens and advanced their prices
for medium weight fowl by a
like amount. At Wint,ipeg,
medium and heavy young tur-
keys,--doolined-one--t
On the dressed Market, heavy
chickens advanced one. cent at
Montreal.
The number of chiekens, two
Months and older, .not intended
for laying show a decline ro'f
over 20 per cent. All provinces
except Ontario report a con-
siderable decline in this cate-
gory. Ontario is the most im-
portant producer of broiler
chicken in Canada and there
fore it is not surprising that
over 30 per cent of these chicks
which are being grown out for

farms. Quebec is second only
to Ontario in broiler chicken
output and first in the produc-
tion of roasting chicken. This
is reflected in table three where
Quebec is shown to have about
23 per cent of the chicks for
meat production on June 1.
The decline in numbers would
indicate that during the latter
half of 1962 the marketing of
chicken meat would decrease.
During the Oriod July 7th to
September 45th this was the
case as the weekly volume of
both broiler and heavy chicken
slaughtered in registered plants
declined two per cent and ten
per cent, respectively, compar-
ed with 1961'.
NOT A SUBSTITUTE—"Can-
ada's support of the World Food
Program will not be at the ex-
pense of 'our other assistance
activities.
"We look upon the World
Food Program as another step
forward in helping to raise the
levels of living of our friends
in the developing countfies."
James Marshall of the Can-
ada Department of Agriculture
Research Station .at Summer -
land, B.C., says much is heard
about the dangers' caused by
the misuse of insecticides, but
few fully realize the -'benefits
derived from these chemicals.
• He says the war against in --
sects is never ending. Without
the advantage of chemicals,
Okanagan fruit growers would
go out of business and the pro-
blems of raising food ev'ery-
where would increase tremend-
ously. A greater problem than
control of the dangers to hu-
mans and beneficial organisms,
according to Mr. Marshall is
the rapid development. of im-
munity by insects to each new
-insecticide.

A ProgressivekrConservative mentator ort station CKNX-.TV
stronghold for 18 years, the
provincial riding of -Huron-
Bruce went Liberal in last
Thursday's by-election. By a
719amajority, Murray Gaunt,
27, of Wingliam, defeated the
PC candidate, ..George Kt!
Cutcheon, of Brussels, and be-
came the 'youngest member of
the Ontario legislature. Vins',
Gaunt becomes the 24th Liberfal
member in the 98 -seat legisla-
ture. Gaunt polled a total of
6,922 votes and McCutcheon,
6,203 votes.
Returning officer, W. B. Mc-
Cool, of Wingham, reported
that 84 per cent of the voters
turned out of the 15,650 who
were eligible to- vote.
Mr. McCutcheon conceded Mr.
Gaunt's election at 9.50 -p.m.,
when 88 polls had been re-
ported. A big election victory
parade took place in Wingham
Thursday evening with the
Lucknow Pipe Band supplying
the music. Following this, Mr.
Gaunt and his supporters made
a speedy tour of the riding into
the early hours of the, morning.
In the last election held in
the riding, the late John W.
Hanna,' Progressive Conserv-
ative, retained his seat when in
June 11, 1959, he defeated Rae
Watson, Liberal, of Lucknow,
by a majority of 1,517 votes.
In 1955, Hanna defeated Hugh
Hill, Liberal, by 1,475 votes.
In commenting on the re-
sults, Premier John P. Robarts
said he was "disappointed over
the outcome." Liberal Leader
John Wintermeyer stated, "The
government must .call a general -
election in the reasonably"near
future,"
The result had no appreci-
able result on the standings in
the. Conservative -heavy legisla-
ture. The PCs have 67 seats,
the New Democratic Party five
and two seats are still vacant.
Youngest MPP
Mr. Gaunt, a television corn -
Wingham, is two years younger
than Robert Gibson, the Liberal
member for Kenora who Pre-
viously was the youngest legis-
lature member.
"The government cannot with-
tamt.oLlet its back to public
opinion in Ontario which is
obviously demanding a change
of government," Liberal Leader
John Wintermeyer said. "This
is a tremendous victory in view
of the fact that Huron -Bruce
has been held by the Conserv,
atives since 1943."
Mr. Gaunt, too, thought- of an
election after his victory.
"Personally, I feel there will
be an election next Attie," he
said. "Today's vote showed
general dissatisfaction with the
present government.''

farm director of CKNX radio
and TV, Mr. Gaunt, a graduate
