bridge. 2We know, too, that
thousands ' of summer cottag-
ers on beaches north of the
bridge all the way to Tober-.
mory are happy about it.
And countless thousands of
tourists this year and in the
years to come will speak with
praise of the new gracious,
arched highway route which
now swings over -the Maitland
- River. It is. such a --distinct_..
departure from the horse and
buggy "trail" which has now
been replaced.
For two .decades, the people
of this area urged the govern-
ment of the necessity .for a
new bridge at Saltford. The
late Tom Pryde,` once MPP
for Huron,' made his voice
heard at Toronto along this
line. the chorus was taken
up by his energetic successor,
Hon. C. S. MacN.aughton, MPP
for Huron. About" four years
ago, a decision' was made by
the Ontario Department of
Highways and a.route was de-
'c!ded upon.

HE MAITLAN
DREAM FUL
AND A MILESTONE
IN THE WAKE OF ,
PROGRESS
The gigantic_ bridge building and highway improvement project that
began 'many months ago will give, highway 21 Motorists a safe, fast access
across the Maitland River for the first time in many years.
Initial traffic began .moving along the new route over the Maitland
last : summer, held up id times, however, by construction equipment still on
the job. But this Tuesday afternoon the entire three-phase, project' will be
9fficially opened.
The dangerous curves and safety 'hazards of the old highway 21:
Maitland River crossing are gone for good -- replaced by this impressive ,
S-shaped route that snakes on its way gradually through the river valley. ,
Gone, too, are the -rusty old Saltford Bridge, the narrow hairpin turns
and two bumpy railway crossings ----a11 ofwhieh. once combinettia.ldnfraut.-tra.
yellers with one • pf Western Ontario's most ominous and dangerous highway
bottlenecks. .
The modern need' structure is truly a milestone in the progress of the
Town of Goderich and the fulfillment of a long standing dream.
