It was a close 2-0 decision at • the hands of St. Thomas, before a record open- ing crowd. It was the first game of the season for both clubs but they ',displayed mid-season form with few errors and playing excellent defensive ball. ‘zit was a heart - breaker for Goderich hurler, Stan Doherty, as he allowed only one earned run. This was a home run in the top of the sixth and came off the bat of the St. Thomas right fielder. Dick Hames, who pitched for Windsor Embassy, last` year's All Ontario Senior "A" -Champ- ions, allowed one more hit than Doherty but kept them scat tered. Although Goderich had base runners on several occas- ions, they failed to touch Hames for those key base' hits. Goderich 6; Wingham 0 Stan Doherty opposed former Bisset grant—Chisholm on the mound last Thursday night in Wingham and picked up his first shutout of the season. This. was his second game in as many nights and he was strong all evening. Doherty allowed only four bits ,to the Wingham nine and was backed up with strong de- fensive ball by his mats. Goderich 1, Stratford 0 In a very : fast and closely - played ga)ne, at Stratford ,on Monday evening, Bissets edged the Kroehlers i-0. -Stan Do- herty and Lorne McKenzie hook- ed up in a pitcher's duel. From the first inning, it was sensed that one run was going to be the difference. Both teams went down in order for four innings and it wasn't until the top of the sixth that Gode- rich seriously threatened. With runners on second and third, and with . two out, McKenzie re- tired the third man• On a strike- out. However, Bissets were not to be denied, and again in the seventh, they came back:Russ Hoffmeyer leading off, beat out a bunt for a clean single. Don Goddard advanced him to third with a single which the• right fielder bobbled momentarily, enabling Hoffmeyer to take third without a play being made on him. Bill Grace sent a grounder to second:-. Hoffmeyer slid in under the throw to the plate. Goderich continued to threaten but was unable to push any more runs across, In the eighth, Stratford, using pinch hitters, advanded• runners to second and third with two out. But Doherty retired the third out on a pop-up to Shew- felt behind the plate. In the ninth- .- inning,- - Stratford._. pulled out all the stops in an effort _' herty set -thein down in order to preserve the win and his second' shutout in three games. Goderich managed' four hits off McKenzie while Stratford could solve the offerings of Doff'brty for only three, two being scratch singles.
