WHY ARE CHAIN. STORE
PRICES GOING UP?
Why have Chain Store operating expenses ris-
' en as much as 25% since 1955?
There appears to biome obvious reasons if we
stop to think about them.. •
One reason appears to be that most cities and
towns now have `too thany stores.
. In other words, new and larger stored are be-
ing_built at a much greater rate than- the increase
in population.
In some cities, stores belonging to the same chain
are now COMPETING WITH EACH OTHER,
These new stores have to be built or rented,
staffed, heated, . lighted, taxed, depreciated, insured
and maintained and at. the same time the available
business is being spread thinner and thinner.
The struggle for ' the available sales dollar is
becoming more desperate—resulting in larger and
larger spending on such things as advertising .and
sales promotion, gimmicks.
..In .this Wednesday's edition of the London Free
Press, one Chain Store has a•TEN PAGE AD — they
must be getting pretty •deitperate.
The only answer to these higher costs and lower
sales per store appears to be higher prices and more
gross profit:
In the face ::of all -this- competition Blues are
sticking to their perinanefit policy of HIGH QUAL-
ITY and LOW PRICES.
Nothing will shake our belief that if Blue's do
right for the public—the public will do right for
Blues. 0
Our faith in this policy is, backed up by the re -
stilts sales volume this year is running
ahead of last year's figures.
4We 'suggest that you too take advantage of
Blue's fair dealing, high-quality; and LOW PRIORS.
