Accent for the Birds
It is to be hoped shit the
vast mass of readers of this
column—last gallop poll ga0e
three—will understand that at
sometimes a little difficult to
maintain the distillation of
words- 'of. great price regarding
horticulture. It becomes a little
boring to all concerned to keep
on giving recipes which will
contribute to the mental an
physical health of the aspidi--
tras, peperomias,• monsteras,
cissus discolor, diefenbachia,
(see Dumb Cane) and quid-
nunes, not to mention the array
of ctenanthe oppenheimiana
tricolor, with which our hot
little ..,rooms are populated.
(Mrs. Bumble, ybn•• must try to
simulate the tropics if you
want your 6ttinia argyoneura
to • thrive as it does in . the
picture.) There is just one
word of warning -before we
leave the subject of horticul-
ture for some other form of
culture: Do not string your
house -plants with baubles. It
is seldom necessary to forsake
the well -stocked shops of Gode-
rich for the palaces of London,
but those few who have, report
that in the Mall` this year
"they" have gone a bundle on
Monsteras to adorn their marble
hats. .One of the saddest sights

of the monstera .-persuasion
have been strung with necklets
of silver balls. (No, dear, our
monstera, in . spite of `super-
human efforts by ourselves, 'the
O.A C., the F.O.N., and even the
E,C.M., is now merely a blessed
memory.)
So let us turn to the fauna
for entertainment aikl interest.
Here are some recent reports
culled from the pages of Roy
Thompson's "Sunday Times"; I
asked Ludwig Koch if birds
watched 'people. He said, yes,
they hide in trees. A garden
warbler watched him setting
up his listening stuff, waited
for him to crawl into the
bushes, then walked up to the
microphone and yelled: Go
away! Koch, the greatest bird-
man in the world was 80 ,in
November. He doesn't look his
age, he is tanned and vigorous
and his hair stands back like
a cockatoo's., Birds have ac-
cents. "I got a chaffinch with
the 'real OxfOrd touch in 1936."
His first bird record was made
it 1889 on a wax cylinder manu-
factured by his friend Edison.
He has records of 178 birds
85 animals and the only record
in the world made by Brahms.
He used to birdwatch with
Neville Chamberlain and was
kissed by Liszt at the age of
four. He lives in Harrow where
the birds are rather shy. In
Koch's garden they eat like
fighting cocks --cheese, peanuts,
cornflakes for breakfast and
con 'i ns' pe on=—throug
the day. Koch says you • need
tremendous " concentration to
watch birds; he couldn't pos-
sibly work up the same amount
to watch people. He is after
the lesser spotted woodpecker;
twelve years in succession he
has journeyed to Epping Forest
in the spring, but the confound-
ed bird only drums. Would

How do termites talk to one
another? Two London enthus-
iasts have been tapping in with
mike and camera, To warn
their comrades of danger, sold-
ier termites simply bang their
heads on the ground, sending
vibrations to the workers in
the galleries. The code is three
or four taps within an eighth
of a second repeated twice a
second. For closed circuit con-
versation- the termites simply
nib their antennae together.
The Swiss have found a third
method. A trail of body secre-
tions is laid to the source of
food.
