New Maitland Bridge
Recalls 1st One Built
(By B,rigadier G. M. Ross)
A 'few weeks ago the third
bridge to span the river Mait-
land at Saliford was opened
for traffic. This does not mequ
that "the approaches are yet
navigable in anything less than
one of the intrepid Euclids
which,',. for some weeks, have
balanced perilously on the
heights above them. Nor does
it mean that anything has been
done to set out range lights to
guide the unwary Mariner
through shoals,. doglegs, abysses
etc., with which the approaches
are peppered. As an obstacle
course the approaches are ac-
knowledged to be in a class
by themselves. However, the
main 'thing is that that inv
ate squirrel --the County
eum—has annexed the plaque
from off the second or
bridge over the ford. T
are so many transients m
up the census figures of G
rich that some account of
doings connected with the
bridge at this crossing may

Let us turn back the Pages.
The time is April, .1841,--420
years ago—and Dr. William
Dunlop is addressing one of
his satirical letters signed
"Roddy Slattery" to "Misther
Editer" of .the Toronto paper,
the "British Colonist." He con-
tinues thusly: "The last time I
writ ye, I tould ye about the
bridge and I've more news to
tell ye about it now. Jist as
that blackguard Harry Hynd-
man said, when the ice came
down last night, it tuck part
of it away with it—but devil
may caro --it will hurt nobody
but the Colborne rapscallions
and they mostly voted against
us, and it was a shame o' the
Big Gineral Governor to spend
four thousand pound on a
bridge for such' a set of -black-
guards. But we're in a bit of
a funk jist now, for we hear
he's goin' to send one Misther
Hamilton Shillelah, - a decent
lump of 'a Connaughtman to
luok aftimr all theaetnatters,-
and an ugly twig he'll be in
the Big Gineral G°overnor's
fisht to bate the Canada Com-
pany all. What need is there
to ' send us an -Engineer —
haven t we Misther Longworth
already? and he writes ` him-
self Civil Engineer. What he
means by civil I'm sure I can't
tell yees but it's a quare handle
to his ndine any how.
Now, what I was going to
tell you at this present is that
we're in a bit of a botheration
here because we hear that the
Big Gineral Governor is conning
up and we can't justmake up
our minds how we are to re -
save him, as they say he's
mighty cute and that we can't
be after humbugging him as
we did ould Sir George Arthur.

Maple Street needs another ,Volkswagen.
When you own a Volkswagen, you
can expect company after a snow
storm. Inquisitive company. They'll
want to know why your car got
through the drifts, and theirs didn't.
There's no trick to it. A Volkswagen
has 'its engine inthe rear where it
does the most good. The extra weight
over the drive wheels provides an
amazing amount of traction, even.on
icy hills. When you ward to stop
scltiely, but in a hurry, the VW's trac-
tion keeps you out of trouble.
Another blessing in cold weather .
is the VW's air-cooled engine. There's
no waler, so there's no need, for
anti -freeze. You don't even need a
garage. Of your Volkswagen won't
start in sub -zero weather, check the
gas gauge.)
Looknderneath a conventional
car and you'll find wires and rods
and whatnot. in deep snow they can
ben drag,andtheycanbe damaged.
The underside of a Volkswagen Is
completely covered with a smooth.
sheet of metal. There's nothing to
hold you back but your own caution.
So, if clearing a snow -filled drive-
way is not for you, make- friends
with a Volkswagen owner. Or, better
still, a Volkswagen dealer.
If you want to trade in your shovel on a new Volkswagen, this is your nearest deafer.
He operates one of 346 VW outlets across Canada.
