THE "MISSION" OF THE CHURCH
(By Rey. C. A. Dukelow, Vic-
toria Street United Church)
The Mission of the Church is
to be the body of Christ on
earth, the organ of His self-
expression, the instrument of
the servant of His
iroly Spirit, the channel through
which there, must flow, ever and
always the strop tide of His
eviHaStIng aiid redeeming love
for all sorts and conditions of
men. The duty of the Church
is not to the elect few. Her
"Mission" is to all souls for
whom Christ died. The "Mis-
sion" of the Church is' not con-
cerned with tastes or ,certain
likings but with the eternal
truth of the Gospel.
The "Mission" of the church
is presenting to all mankind
what is necessary for the sal-
vation of all sorts and condi-
tions of men. The Church does
not prescribe some doubtful
remedy -she is the answer and
the cure-all for all souls. Her
gospel is for the mind and heart
and soul of all.
She does not commend to the
world one among many leaders
or teachers -she proclaims her
Lord as the bearer of the only
Name under heaven by which
men can be saved. The Church-in-Goderich. We welcome to

ment is horrifyingly brief. Men
today seek the power that can
bring them through the dark-
ness into the light of the eter-

In recent years the "Mission"
of the Church has been im-
mensely helped by the discov-
ery that the Church- does not
mean only, or primarily the
priests or ministers. The
clergy are set ,apart for their
own special function and es-
sential work in the Church.
But every man, woman, and
child has an active function to
perform. The Church in "Mis-
sion" means the whole body of
the faithful.
The laity of the Church must
be' trained, equipped and en-
couraged to work in -the "Mis-
sion" of the Church. Their
field of evangelism is. in and
around their own Church and
all the time helping in the
world wide mission of evangel -
must seek to further the "Mis-
sion" of the Church 'by prayer,
by witness, by the creation of
a welcoming fellowship, - by
whatever personal acts of direct
evangelistic service the Holy
Spirit' may prompt, in the par=
ticular : conditions of, each
Church -by all and ' every
means, the whole people of
od in each place rust bestir
itself -to the task of saving
souls.
