Constable Creedon of the Ovnierich Police department, toad' Chief Constable Fred Min - shall that he pulled out into the north lane of Highway 8 early Saturday morning to stop the car that was being driven by Mr. Fradgley. The constable said his cruiser hit a patch of slush, skidded on the road, sideswiped.aree and hit tvo stumps'.. Dan age is estimated at $1250, Mr. Fradgley noticed the mis- hap, stopped and returned to the scene. He assisted Con- stable Creedon from the car and stayed with him while he phon- ed the Goderich Provincial Police detachment. The OPP izivestigate accidents that occur in the north lane of the road and town police handle the ogler side. The OPP tailed Chief Min, shall and he went to the scene. 1 saw the boy but wasn't talk- ing to©him. If he•had not come back we would never have seen him." The police chief commended the youth far his action and said he felt certain few drivers would have returned to the scene under the circumstances. Chief Minshall said his de- partment would not lay a sheed- ing charge against Mr. Fradg- ley. The Car Kind Says County History On Last Lap The historic committee of HgRon County Council has been advised that it should now make necessary preparations for the publication in 1962 of a book on The History of Huron County. Professor James Scott, of Seaforth, commenced writing the book some eight years ago. County Council has been advis- ed the book is A;in its final stages as far as manuscript work is concerned." The his- toric committee has .. recom- mended that the 1962 County Council set aside $10,000 .for the publishing . of the book. DONNYBROOK MARS SIFTOS" 1 7-2 VICTORY OVER LONDON A wild, free swinging donny- brook that involved players and fans marred the Siftos convinc- ing 7-2 win over the London Nationals here Friday night. The Win moved Goderich into undisputed possession of third place just a game back of the Tillsonburg Mavericks. Scoring opened quickly in the game when at the 36 second mark London let the Siftos know thatthey were not going to be any easy two-point win. Goderich tied the score. five minutes later, only V to have • ..a ON A NEW OR USED CAR from NOW 'til DECEMBER 20 The Car King doesn't want -anybody to be out of pocket for coming down to see him so, he is going to pay you $3.00 on the receipt of a signed offer. . Paquette, of London, put tl}e Nationals back on top 48 sec- onds after the Goderich tally. Any thoughts the Siftos had of an easy win were quickly banished as they found them- selves down twice within five minutes of the opening—frame. After the six minute mark Goderich began to show' that they were the better ,team and through the rest of the period showed a fine passing attack. If the 'puck had been bouncing for them they could have had more than the two goals by Armstrong And Deschambault. London came out in the sec - '044 and carried the play for the first five minutes but as was the case all night they could not finish off tiles' plays around the net or the Siftos might have found themselves again' battling on equal terms. Again . Goderich gained their composure and from the five minute mark on it was the Siftos all the way, scoring four goals and not leaving much doubt as to the eventual win- ner: The only scoring play of the slower third period came after Leduc with assistance from Bob Stickle dug the puck out from the boards, ' carried it out in front Of the net and put a low screen shot in to the left hand corner. Goderich had many other scoring opportunities but Art Martin of'the Nationals was equal to the test as he kicked out shot after shot at point blank range and with his own team mates screening him. Stops And Starts- The score was not indicative of the evening's play as the Nationals showed a lot more than anybody thought they had. When the defence learns to clear from their own zone. and scoring plays they will be heard from. Throughout the game, they skated with and sometimes past the Siftos" and showed also ,that they know how to pass that puck. The looseness of 'the Nation- als' defence was indicated by how many .,times the London netminder had to come up with save after save. At tunes it looked like he was invincible and was certainly the standout on the night's performance, for both sides. it was encouraging to see how much the Siftos defence has come along in othe five games played to date. When London tried to press; the rear- guard wasn't long getting the puck out of their «own zone. Coach Jack Evans has done a fine job whipping this part of his squad into an effective force. The line of Leduc, Descham- bault and Williamson picked up four of the seven goals scored by the Siftos. While Descham- bault scored- three goals and paced the attack a bouquet must be thrown in the direction of Dennis Williamson who was a tireless worker and although every player towered above him and also outweighed him he never hesitated to go into ,the corners or along the boards with the biggest of them. Another standout on the night. performance was Armstrong who picked up one goal and worked hard throughout ' the •'gilt. Actually. Hank is. one of those players who doesnt Nook spectacular out there but in th^ games to date he has never quit working. Brian Goodwin and Wayne Cauffeld were also effective. Cauffield picked up another two goals to add to his total. It was discouraging to seP only 600 fans out to see the locals. We are impressed by the ac- tivities that are available for old and young alike, no matter what their bent. For those who want to, stay in some kind. of shape through the winter months Don Samson informs us that badminton is one of the finest sports in which you can participate. For the past few weeks now, those in- terested parties have been showing up at the GDCI gym fo in uc ion and •la . While neither profess to be pros, Don Samson and Murray Draper are giving the newcomers some in- struction in the game. Young fellas and those who think they are still young, nurse, the odd bruise and ach- ing joint on Thursday morning after the weekly Industrial Hockey League ' matches on - Wednesday night. We haven't had the blades on much since becoming too old for junior hockey, so just a 15 minute skate around the ice chasing a puck the other night proved that ,the participants in this league are truly enthusiastic, hearty souls. The figure skating club has an excellent enrolment this year and are well under way for their 1961-62 season. This type of organization has cer- tainly .grown in popularity over the years and is healthy recre- ation for the old and young alike. We cannot help but ad- mire those who master the art of figure skating as it takes a tremendous amount' of practice and co-ordination. :gosh r'i —ns-drat ball has replacede football and the teams will soon start com- peting for league honors. From the small fry to those in their late teens there is mnckh enjoyment and satisfac- tion -being derived from week- ly play., in the GMHA leagues. We might .suggest that the par- ents can derive as much satis- faction from going out to watch their sons playing at the arena. We realize that we have mentioned this before and we will probably mention it every week from now until the end of the minor hockey sea- son. We believe strongly in the theme of Young Canada Week, "This Week Take—Don't Send Your Boy To The Arena." Bowling has been -growing in popularity year after year and we would be safe in saying that ere are probably more people mmv'olvdd in this sport than in all the others combined. The enthusiasm of the bowlers is indicated by the faet that year after year the season gets un- der `away earlier andfinishes later. If you are not involved in any type of recreation for he winter months, we might recommend this es prdbably the, least strenuous. It would appear that there is everything here except the very popular winter pastime of curling. In recent years this sport has been taking as big a hold in the winter as golf does m the summer. We were en couraged the " other -day to see .a" veatienn.ajre whic... lad been sent out in an effort to see how many Goderich and district people would support a com- binedcurling-golf club: Com- bining the two sports in one club house is the popular thing. boys have played well in all their home games. Sarnia will be here next Friday and should give, the boys a good tussle. • 195 5 MODELS • PONTIAC PATHFINDER Deluxe 4 door sedan with automatic drive, custom radio. We hope it is found this type of thing can be#successful here. So now at least Goderich has its sporting activities in their' proper prospectus, with base- ball and football being over and all the winter sports in full swing. We might mention that we do not have time to get out to all the sporting activities going on and .we would appreciate being kept informed on anyi happenings of interest and spec- ial events. ow urger Figure Skaters The Goderich Figure Skating Club regretfully announced'" that due to an over 100 ,per cent increase in memberships, all classes are filled for the 1961-62 season and no further members can be accepted. Plans were discussed for an ice show to be -held in 'March by the members. Plans were also made to hold adult classes in dancing " start- ing in January. Details are to be announced at a later date. ,The membership now is in excess of 100 with a notable in- crease in non -skaters. Among the new members are youngsters from the age of 31/• to 6 Years who are learning to skate. There. are six new mem- bers from Bayfield with all the rest being from Goderich. Berry told Huron County Council 'this week. . He said although the high- way account showed a deficit of 'slightly more than --$78,009 for the period ending September 30, 'the county Med "-erid---the year with a balance. Highway expenditures during this period were slightly, over $928;000. County revenue for the same period was $402,250 and ex- penditures were $382,000. He said the highway department must carry out • its major pro- grams within a short time and as a result builds 'up large ex- penditures. Revenue is not available to pffset these ex- penditures "until the end of the year. Mr. Berry said this is a constant problem and it would seem that either the program will have to' be reduced or funds increased to keep up the financial end of the department.
