chance of taking the Ontario
crewn this year.
They indicated their strength
against Port Elgin when they
whipped the 'Merchants in two
straight games 11-1 and 15-4.
Port Elgin had considered their
team to be of championship
calibre .. indicating that their
teamwas going to take the
Ontario championship this year.
Port Elgin defeated Goderich
four years ago in playoff action
but it was en entirely different
team from Goderich that ripped
into Port Elgin pitching this
year.
Last Friday night in Port
Elgin, the Bissets, behind the
thrpe-hit pitching of Stan Doh-
erty, soundly trounced the Mer-
chants by the score of 11-1.
The Bissets led off in the first
inning with two runs, added
three more in the second and
never looked back as they scor-
ed almost at will.
Ron Carter hammered a home
run in the second inning, driv-
ing in a run ahead of him and
Russ Hoffmeyer followed with
another home run. Don God-
dard and Deb Shewfelt collected
three hits apieee and every
member of the team collected at
least one hit in the 16 -hit bar-
rage. Stan Doherty, bearing
down only when he had to,
limited the Port Elgin nine to
three hits while striking out 11
batters.. His shut -out was spoil-
ed when, with one out in the
ninth, Ron Bruce hit a'home run
scoring Port Elgin's lone run.
On Saturday night back in
Goderich, the Bissets showed no.
mercy . as they battered Port
Elgin 15-4 to take the ,quarter
final series in twa ;straight
games. Grant Chisholm on the
mound for the Bissets experienc-
ed Alittle control trouble in the
first inning- with the result that
Port Elgin scored two runs --on
a hit batsman, a single and two
errors. However, Goderich came
back with,,,five runs' in the bot-
tom of the first iiiAng and Chis-
holm, 'with ,-that incentive, set-.
tled down and pitehed beautifiil
ball for • the remainder of the
\
game. He limited Port Elgin to
four hits, while striking out five
batters. .
Goderich batters again had a
. field day, smashing Port Elgin
pitcher Fred Brown for 18 hits.
13,on Carter and Russ Hoffmeyer
again hit back to back home
runs, in the second inhing with
Carter's clearing the fence in
right centre field at the 220'
mark and .Hoffmeyer's being
an inside the paik home run.
Don Goddard had a perfecf night
at the plate, hitting safely four
times in four times at bat. He
also shone defensively at first
base, grabbing several tough
drives off the Port Elgin bats.
Gerry Pitre the Goderich
