PRICES CAUSE SOME UNREST
(By J. C. Hemingway)
The new methif1 of selling
hogs has been in operation for
two weeks at, time of writing.

come about is quite acceptable
but there seems to be conflicting
opinions as to how touch credit
should go to the. new method of
sale. The number of hogs going
to market hardly justifies the
change in price. k'erhaps we
would de well to wait a little
before: forming opinions.
One thing that seems to be
causing general dissatisfaction
is the wide variation in prices
from day to day and even on the
same day. The result seems to
be requests for the pooling of
the pace so that over a given
period the price weutd be the
same to all producers.
As has been stated many times
by the Hog Producers' Marketing
Board, it can be done. ' However,
in the past, the powers that con-
trol the regulations under the
Act have told us that new regul-
ations would have to be passed
and perhaps a vote of producers
wguld be necessary to make
pooling legal.
Now the Hog Producers' Mar-
keting Board have received
some indication from the Farm
Products Marketing .Board that
pooling of price could take place
without an particular difficulty.
Definite clification will have
to come from Government be-
fore any action can be taken.
The second consideration is
the period over which the pool-
ing would take place. If on the
basis of one week, there would
be no appreciable increase in
costs of operation. Most farmers
would be several days late in re -
ceiving their cheques. If the
period were by the quarter in-
terim, payments would be neces-

If it is. for the whole southern
Ontario area there is do -problem
but there is a difference in qual-
ity between a Grade A corn fed
hog carcass and a Grade' A car=
sass from a hog fed om an oat -
barley ration. This could cause
dissatisfaction, since Grade A
hogs from areas of a high corn
ration have - been selling 20, ,to
50c below other ,,areas.
If boundaries for areas' are to
be set up, the difficulties are
great. A ain perhaps we should

In regard to e the "present in-

made. According to the Ottawa
report, only one manufacturer
has presented a brief and has
been ,quite reluctant to supply

needed, however, the cora.

the various plants and hopes to

Ontario's Transport Minister John Yareznnko measures Donna McNall's height with the
aid of the Department's new safety ruler while Luciana DelMonte, Jack Bernstein and
Geoffrey Ebisuzaki of Toronto's Clinton Street School wait their turn. The ruler combines
height and weight charts with practical traffic reminders for children. For the twelfth
consecutive year the Transport Department and the. De_partment of Education will
distribute one million of these summer safety reminders to Ontario's -elementary-school
children. A portion of the three-foot ruler is' shown at left.

discovered soon after Columbus

than 250 years passed before
the first European ship was
