bert attended Ryerson Institute
of„Technology at Toronto under
the Colombo plan, for the past
three years. Following gradu-
ation this spring, he came to
Goderich for seven weeks to get
a practical knowledge of road
machinery maintenance. Albert
stated that there are mostly Am-
erican-made graders in Borneo
and as yet no Canadiansmanu-
factured machine has been
five-year secondary school edu•
catien. Since 1907, the govern-
ment has also operated a school
on this island.

Albert said there is great
need for road building in hts

paved road at present,•they are
now planning to build a new
highway from Jesselton to San-
dakan, right' across the tip of
the island through the jungle
and forest. This northern part
of Borneo is now under British
Protectorate while the remain-
ing portion of the country
is

the war it was occupied by the
Japanese from 1942 to 1945.
Albert has two brothers and
two sisters, one, brother, a teach-
er, and the other younger bro-
ther is studying. for his Senior

is also a teacher while the other
one has gone into the nursing

He has several friends from
his native country who are also

Mrs. C. R. Holland, newly -
elected spresident of the Gode-
rich Women's Institute, was in
the chair for the May meeting
held in MacKay Hall. ' Mrs. N.
McInnis presided at the piano.
The minutes were read by the
secretary, Mrs. K. F. Wilkinson,
and she "also gave the financial
statement.
Recommendations from the
program planning committee
were discussed and approved.
The secretary read the list of
short courses which are avail,,
able to W.I. members from the.
Department-crf Home Economics,.
but no decision was reached.
Delegates appointed- to attend
the district annual to be held
at Wingham were: Mrs. C. R.
Holland, Mrs, Norman Clair-
mont jMrs. Norman McInnis,
Mrs. George Morley, Mrs. K. F.
Wilkinson and Mrs. Andrew.
Straughan. Transportation was
arranged for any other -members
wishing to attend.
The members decided to
again sponsor a 4-H home -mak-
ing club this fall with the lead-
ers being Mrs. Andrew Strau-
ghan, Mrs. Norman Clairmont,
and Mme: Donald Riehl. The lead-
er of the last club on "Cottons
may be Smart" • had a display of
the cotton dresses Made by the
girls.
A bus trip in June is' being
planned by Mrs. James Bisset
and . Mrs. L. Bannister for-, the
members to go on a sight-seeing
tour in Toronto.
Mrs. - Holland gave the report
of the recent F.W.I.O. confer-
ence for presidents held in
Guelph whieh she attended re-
cently.

END FOR SEASON
The film programs for child-
ren; which have been shown at
the Public Library each Satur-
day afternoon since the first of
November, were brought to a
close recently, ending the film
showings for this season. There
were 29 programs throughout
the winter months, with a total
attendance of 872, or an average
attendance of 33. These films
are shown by Miss Betty Mac-

FRANK - HELESIC
After an illness of. some four
months, the death occurred sud-
denly on Saturday of Frank
Helesic, 69, at his home on Bri-
tannia road, east. He was born
in Czechoslovakia on January 24,
1892, coming to Canada in 1927.
He first resided in Winnipeg for
two years, then in Windsor for
two years and finally came . to
Goderich in 1931'where he since
resided. He was well-known in
the town and rural area as a
metal dealer.
During World War I, he serv-
ed with the German Army on
the Russian and Italian fronts.
On January 16, 1916, he was
married at Moravia, CSechoslo-
vakia, to the former -Helen
Horka. His parents were 'the
late Paul Helesic and the former
Theresa Kovarzic. .
Although he came to Canada
in 1927, his family from O echo-
sl:ovakia '-did not joist him hete
until 1931. Surviving besides
his wifearefive sons: Gerald; of
Czechoslovakia; Stephen and
,William, of Goderich; Mark, of
London; James, of Clinton.
There are also nine grandchild'
ren as well as three sisters and

vakia..

The funeral was held on Tiles
day afternoon at the Stiles fun-
eral home with Rev. G. L. Royal,
Of Knox Presbyterian Church
of which the deceased was ar
adherent, officiating. Pallliear-
ers were: W. Kinahan, D. Trem-
bley, F. Rouse, A. Johnston, J.
Cook and R. Bridle. Interrnen'
was in Maitland cemetery.
