Speaking as a reptesentative
of the Toronto Hockey League,
Mr. Earl Elliott stated that the
T.H.L. holds the Goderich Lions
jub's Young Canada Week in
very high regard and added, "I
am sure they will continueto do
so for many years to come."
He stated that the T,H.L. had
only one objection and that was
that Toronto teams -woe the
championship too often. Answer-
ing an often repeated accusation
that Toronto teams are "pack-
ed," Mr. Elliott pointed out that
if one team in "not packed" it
is the team from Toronto. He
explained that each team in Tor-
onto has the same players on
it from the start of the season to
the last and the team which
comes to Goderich is the same
one that started the season to-
gether. He stated that it was
the winter -long ambition .of each
of the 26 pee wee teams in the
0
tional Hockey League in about
two years."
"The budget to run a junior
hockey team runs to abdut
$50,000 for the year."

The guest speaxer, Eddie
Bush, stated that only one out
of every 10,000 boys who play
hockey "in' Canada ever reach
the National Hockey League. He
paid tribute . to the sponsoring
work of the-Goderich Lions Club
and said,. "I only wish there had
been a Lions Young Canada
Week when I was a boy hockey
player , at ColIingwood. He
praised the playing -of Larry
Jeffrey, of Goderich, who Was
present at the banqust, andePaul
Henderson, of Lucknow, both
members of the Hamilton Junior
"A"' team: Emphasizing the
need for young hockey, players
to make stare they do not miss
schooling, Eddie Bush said "I
stress the fact that there is
nothing wrong with being an
educated hockey player."
He pointed out that playing
Tiro- hockey today was a good
career. He said the N.H.L. had
a pension plan which is second
to none. The very least any
player gets on the Toronto team
is $8,000 a year, he said.
At the conclusion of his ad-
dress, the young hockey players
fired a barrage of questions at
him and his answers to those
questions included the. follow-
ing:
"Eddie Shore was the best
defence hockey player ever, I
-believe," w
"Larry Jeffrey is coming along

rich and, Young Canada Week.
Mr. Elliott, concluded his re-
marks by reminding tile Godes
ich pee wee hockey players they
were every lucky to have the
hand in the business, would re-
fer to as a "mug shot." - The
reason why -he happened to get
his mug reprinted in Stratford
was that Bill Elliott had brought
the paper an honorable mention
in the 1961 Western Ontario
Newspaper Awards. He won it
with timely and trenchant com-
nfent on Thefts from the Job-
less Fund. -
"The fact is 'that Bill Elliott
has been going strong for more
than 55 years, and he has i e
come an elder statesman of On-
tario jd'urnalism. He was, once
managing • editor of the Wood-
stock paper. He did a tour of
duty in the press ;,gallery of the
Ontario Legislature. He , once
wrote editorials for the London
Free Press, then for The Mail
and Empire in Toronto. He
wrote one of the most interest-
ing anecdotal books on public
affairs in Ontario, Politics Is
Funny. .
"A 'craftsman in a field cloak-
ed,, with anonymity, Bill Elliott
has possibly shaped the political
thinking, year in and year out,
of more newspaper readers in
Optario than anyone else. He
even held public office at one
time, as a member of the Lake-
shore Board of Education. He
used to have the best -rose gar-
den in Mimico. The latest word
from him in Goderich is that 'I
am only waiting for a little sun
to get out to the garden and
away from the typewriter:' It's
a safe bet._he r ally rtgt,--get
far from that typewriter."
