Dear Editor:
On April 19th, the citizens .of
Goderich will be called upon to
vote on the question of whether
or not the town shall have More
.outlets for the sale of liquorin
-The- argUnient is frequently'
advanced that ewnornic benefits

froth having theProPoseci dining

license (cocktail bar). Is this
argument a sound one? „ It may
be true that some additional rev-
enue would'be derived from the
sales through the proposed out-
lets, but, if experience is any
guide such sales would also
create a need •for more police
protection; add to the cost of
administering justice, and other
municipal services, and the net
result would most likely be an
increased municipal tax rate. It
Iias been estimated- that across
Canada, the 'costs attendant upon
additional services created by
alcohol are at least 21,., times
as much as the revenue -derived
from legal sale at all levels.
There is also another angle
from which the above argument
may be challenged. Money spent
on liquor. is not spent on food, tarip alone, and a reliable auth-
clothing, and other merchandise ority states that 80r,'ic of these
that may be classified under the are attributable to alcohol, The
rategory of necessities, so who
benefits? With less money avail-
able for these, credit sales would
almost • certainly increase, and
collections would become more
difficult.
It is also argued by those
who advocate more and more
outlets for the sale of liquor,
that economic benefits `would
accrue at the governmental
level. The words of a former

other occasion. • "If the profits
of the trade were applied to
meeting the consequences of it,
there would be tio revenue." No
connnunity and nO nation can
drink itself into prosperity. .
° Even if we could accept the
argument that increasing the
number of outlets would bring
financial gain at the municipal
level, or the governmental. level,
or both, we would still have to
indst that our community will
be a better community without
such outlets. The moral and
social consequences of increased
sales of liquor constitute the
strongest argument • against
these. There are approximately

Editor, Signal -Star.
Dear Sir:
1 realize we live in the coun-
try and do not vote in your
coming 'liquor vote" but we
are concerned with the result
of this issue.
We have no drinking problem
in our home. I have. conversed
with many women who ,would
rather be in, and shop in a town
where there are no "liquor
lounges" or "beverage rooms",so
that the "breadwinner" wbn't
have this temptation. MOneY
would be going for liquor and
not, -for things needed for . the
home, or they might be involved
in a serious accident and
,not
get home. I can't see the town
benefiting-bY -additional outlets,
as it takes many thousand's of
dollars spenron liquor efoire
.y the town realizes a few Wndred
paid to them as their percentage
from the revenue of liquor sold.
Statistically,. • alcoholism would
double with each additional out-
,
let.
Goderich is our town and we
like it as it is. We have taught
our children, as I am sure many
others have, the evils of alcohol.
For the safety of all of us and
example seLfor our children we
hope there will be no places for
beer and 'liquor in Goderich.
SO those of you who have the
vote, young and old, get out and
help defeat this vital issue.
Yours truly,
Mrs. John Westbrook.

Dear Sirs: •
Please find enclosed money
order for renewal of the sub-
scription to the home -town
paper.
We get great pleasure reading
of old friends and changes.there,
We were delighted with the
notice of our 57th wedding an-,
niversary last June.
We had many letters from dis-
tant friends. Otherwise, we
would not have had them. Some
were Rev. J. lire Stewart, Eph
Tweedie, Columbus, Ohio, Mrs.
W. Wallice (Minnie Sprung) and
many others across the contin-
ent.
We missed December 2nd
paper and sister-in-law sent one.
Thanking you very kindly. I
remain,
Yours sincerely,

Dear People:
Herewith another money
order for renewal - of my sub-,
scription.
A new children's institution
and a new bridge across the
good old Maitland river marks
Goderich as a growing commun-
ity.
As for The Signal -Star, I still
read all, of it every week, but
the names of people I know be-
come fewer each year. . ,
Sincerely,
(Dr.) J. 13. Long.
P.S.—I am still in active prac-
tice, and now drawing my O.A.

In its excellent advice to
trilting pPopla on health and hap-
piness the Book of Knowledge
quotes a wise person who has
sear irnich 1:4` life and always
says, when things are not going
quite right, "This, too, will pass."
It is a sentiment which older
people might Well take to heart,
too. '
