"Your committee is not mak-

time," said Reeve McCutcheon,
"but we urge you to consider
the submissionseriously, keep-
ing in mind that a county road
system should serve the county
as a whole, and not any par-
ticular area."
Procedure in cutting 82 miles
from the system, said 'VJ;r. Brit-
nell, would be to turn` -'the ,eau's
concerned back to the town-
ships. The county could do this
on its own authority, ,he said,
just as the provi-n•ce can turn
a section of King'sHighway
back to a county, without any
need to get agreement from the
co unty.
The county roads department
can not cut costs on new road
construction to any- appreciable
extent, Mr. Britnell explained,
because road 'building subsidiz-
ed by the province must he done

been increased during the past

More dollars to each mile of
road, it was noted in a table of
comparisons presented by Mr.
Britnell. The 204 miles of
county read in`Perth, the table
showed, are supported by an
assessment of $38,000,000, while
the 390 miles of county roa.d irk
Huron are supported by, an as-
sessment of $6'0,000,000,. 'On the
basis of 1958 iigires, Perth was
spending $2,400 a mile of road
each year, while Huron was
spending $2000.
With Huron's big area, and
big county road system, the
table showed, each $1,000,000
of assessment in Huron has • to
support 6.5 miles of county road.
In Perth, the comparable figure
is 5.4 miles of road per
$1,000,000 of assessment. In
Middlesex the •figure.is 4.4 miles,
in Oxford 3.8, in Bruce 5.8,
and in Grey 7.5.

SURGE IN POPULATION
PRODUCTION BOOSTER
An estimated increase of
about four million in the Can-
adian population in the next 10
years will provide a stimulant
to farm production and will also
benefit retail 'distribution ser-

economist with the Canada De-

His review of various reports
on Canada's economic prospects
indicates however, that a large
acreage of agricultural land in
the Central Provinces will go
out of cultivation before the
food needs of an expanded
