Galt secured Dunlop an appoint-
ment as "Warden of the For-
ests." Dunlop undertook the
exploration of the Huron; Tract,
as it was called, in 1827, pnd
en April 23 "had the honor and
elory of laying the axe to the
root" of the first tree felled
where Guelph now stands. That
,ummer he commenced the eon-,
etruction of the Huron road
gad at its terminus founded the
town of Goderich. There, an

River, he built his home, "Gair-
araid." ,
In 1833 he was appointed Gen-
eral Superintendent of the
Huron Tract, and he remained
for a further five years in the
Com.pany's employ. .During the
Rebellion of ,1837, he command-
ed a regiment of militia at
Sarnia. In 1841 he stood"for a
'-eat in the provincial legisla-
ture, was declared defeated, but
appealed9and won the seat. Five
years later he resigned from the
legislature to become Superin-
tendent:of the Lachine Canal.
On June 29, 1848, he died at
'Lachine. His mortal remains,
