Dryness and ventilation are particularly
necessary, as many cases of fever and diph-
theria can be traced to this neglect. Fruits
and vegetables, and indeed every article of
corrosive properties, are more apt to decay
if left in a place where the surroundings
are damp. The absolute necessity of a
clean, dry cellar requires us to whitewash
all walls and ceilings at least twice a year,
and to place some lime and charcoal in. dif-
ferent, receptneleit as often as the feeling of
dampness can be experienced. Theso arA

Astar:lingeas6 of cruelty to a servant girl
was recently tried at the Dublin C'ommiasion
Court. A woman named Barbara t dell, wife
of a inerchant living et Clontarf, was indic-

aged fourteen years, wham she had engaged
from the Protestant Orphan Society to act
as nurse. it appeared that the girl, who is
of a delicatoeonstittition, has been frequent-
ly deprived of food, and beaten with whips
and sticks by her mistress. She was also
struek on the head with a saucepan, and on
one occasion site was stripped almost naked
and whipped with a dog -whip in the pre-
sence of Mrs. Odell'stwo eons because she
had fallen asleep while in charge of a child.
On the saute occasion ber mistress stuck a
needle into her arin, and brake it off. The
girl escaped one morning betwei ri two and
three o'clock, and traveiled across the coun-
try eight miles to some friends for protec-
tion. Airs. Odell was convicted, but was rec-
commended to mercy on account of her large
young family. She was sentenced to two

An interesting case, under the Agricul-
tural Holdings Act, which has excited much
Attention in Scotland, has just been finally
decided, after protracted litigation. An
outgoing tenant claimed £950 from hislaud-
lord on account of unexhausted improve-
ments, while the landlord claimed upwards
of £1400 for dilapidations. No fewer than
five well -known -valuers gave evidence, and,
finally, the case was referred to an arbitrator,
who has granted £305 to the tenant for his
improvements and £25 to the landlord on
account of the dilapidations.

The internal organs do not want to be
thought about. .A man's stomach is healthy.
when be doesn't know he has one. When
we are conscious of the existence of any in-
ternal organ, that organ is sick. The inter-
nal machinery was intended to do its work
unconsciously. When we begin to think
about our stomachs, digestion is arrested.
John Hunter said he got gout by thinking
of his great toe. A man who sits at the
table wondering if baked potatoes will agree
with him, and -whether fruits and vegetables
are a good combination, is in a fair way to
have trouble with the simplest kind of food.
Thinking about the internal organs sets them
in a sort of stage fright and they are power-
less.

Water at Meals.
Opinions differ as to the effect of the free
ingestion of water at meal tines, but the
view most generally received is probably
that it dilutes the gastric juice and so re-
tards digestion. Apart from the fact that a
moderate delay in the process is by no means
a disadvantage, as Sir Williain Roberts has
shown in his explanation of the popularity
of tea and coffee, it is more than doubtful
whether any such effect is in reality produc-
ed. When ingested during meals, water
may do good by washing out the digested
food and by exposing the undigested part
more thoroughly to the action of the diges-
tive ferments,. Pepsin is a catalytic body,
and a given quantity' will work almost inde-
finitely,

provided the peptones
as they are formed. The good effect of water
drunk freely before meals has, however, an-
other beneficial result -it washes away the
mucus which is secreted by the mucous
membrane during the intervals of repose,
and favors peristalsis of the whole alimen-
tary tract. The membrane thus cleansed is
in a much better condition to receive food
and convert it into soluble compounds.

• A physician, writing of rest as a medioine,
recommends a short nap in the middle of the
day,> for those who can take it, as a beneficial
addition to the nights sleep.' It divides the
working titne, gives the nervous systeno e
fresh hold on life and enables one to do niore
than make up for the. time so occupied. A
caution is given against indulgence in too
long a sleep at such a time, under a penalty
of disagreeable relaxation. There has been
much discussion regarding the: after-dinner
nap, many believing it to be injurious, b
it is, nevertheless, natural and wholesome.

Wotna
They talk'about a w oinan's sphere
As though it has a limit.
There's not a whispered yes or no,
There's not a blessing or a woe,
There's not a life, or death, or birth,
There's not a thing in heaven or ear ,,
That has a ponuy's weight of worth
Without a woman in it.
