The collision w'hic'h resulted i
in Robert J. Pitblaclo, 18 -year-old,
bank clerk at Norwich, being
charged with . careless driving:
puzzled the court somewhat. A
mile and a quarter east of Car-
low, on the county road, on the
night of October, 9, Pitblado's
car, eastbound, rammed an
Austin halted on the north side
of the road. The standing car
contained;?Logan A. McLean
and a' -couple of eompanions, who
said the vehicle had "quit."
OPP Constable Robert Sims'
measurement showed that its
right front wheel was 91 feet
from the north side of the road.
Marks ,indicated that the impact
occurred„ while the M.aof.ean car
was on the right side of the
road, and that it was driven
back 15 feet. ' Both vehicles
were heavily damaged.
Asked by Mr. 'Murphy, coun-
sel for the accused, why he shut
3ff his headlamps, MacLean
said: "No sense in running the
battery down."
George Robertson, to whose
farmhouse L1'IacLean and friends
went for help, said their car
appeared to have stopped about
the centre of the road. He saw
one bottle of beer thrown into
the ditch, ,Someone set It hack
in case anyone came to claim it,
"To the best of my knowledge
it is there still," he said.
":Maybe we better ,adjourn,
quickly," suggested Mr. Murphy.
Pitblado explained that the,
lights of the MacLean car were
turned on suddenly when. 'he
was only 30 feet away; that he
applied his brakes and his car
skidded. His counsel said it was'
doubtful if the MacLean car'
