Though the "voice with a
smile" will pass from the scerie
in Goderich shortly, no perman-
ent operators wishing to con-
tinue in telephone work will be
released as a result of the:
changeovu according to W. W.
Haysom, Bell Telephone man-
ager for thls area.
"From the Moment that it was
decided to carry out the change -
ver, careful plans were made
for the welfare of the operators,"
Mr. Hays= said. "A number
of steps were taken in the past
two years to make sure that no
permanent employees would be
out of work as a result of the
change."
Ever since the decision to
connect the exchange to dial,
any new onerators needed were
hired on the understanding that
their employmeLt might be tem-
porary, operators contemplating
leaving were invited to s,tay on
until the time of the change-
over, and former operators were
asked to,return to the switch-
board temporarily until the con-
version. Then, Mr. Haysom eon -
tinned, •as the date of the con-
version came near, all perman-
ent operators were offered
transfers to Clinton or other
n earthy. centres.
Recent Bell- Telephone pic-
tures appearing ---in.'tifir-rissue
were taken by Robert J. Nep-
hew, proprietor of MacLar-
en's Studio, St. David's Street,
Goderich.
DIAL ON THE
PARTY LINES
Under the dial system, party
line users in the Goderich ex
change area will employ a dif-
fernt procedure for calling the
parties with 'whom they share
their lines than they will for
calls to all other persons - in the
exchange ara.'
From two-party lines, a caller,
will dial 1191 and hang up: Both
his own and th.a other party's
telephone bells will ring. When
the l'inging stap,..: the _other
party has. answered. The caller
shoUld then remove his receiver
promptly and start the conver-
sation. IT the ringing does noti::..:1'

a moment to stop it.
Ajural line customer, after
dialing his party lincrrrtertror's
number, will hear' the "busy"
signal. He will then l'eplace his
receiver .and both telephones
will ring.
If the caller hears the 'ring
ing stop, hewill know the call
has bbefrliswered and he can,
pitk up his receiver and begin
the cn,ver'sation.
Should the called party not
answer, the ringing, will con-
tinue. To stop it, the calling
party need only remove his 're
ceiver, then replace it. •
The interior of Goderich's new teiephone exchange .building
contains row after row of dial switchesphoused in prottive
canisters designed to keep out dust and dirt. Bob Peacok,
Bell central office man, has removed two such canisters. and
is checking the switches ,prior to the, introduction of dial
srice.
