Though the "voice with a smile" will pass from the scerie in Goderich shortly, no perman- ent operators wishing to con- tinue in telephone work will be released as a result of the: changeovu according to W. W. Haysom, Bell Telephone man- ager for thls area. "From the Moment that it was decided to carry out the change - ver, careful plans were made for the welfare of the operators," Mr. Hays= said. "A number of steps were taken in the past two years to make sure that no permanent employees would be out of work as a result of the change." Ever since the decision to connect the exchange to dial, any new onerators needed were hired on the understanding that their employmeLt might be tem- porary, operators contemplating leaving were invited to s,tay on until the time of the change- over, and former operators were asked to,return to the switch- board temporarily until the con- version. Then, Mr. Haysom eon - tinned, •as the date of the con- version came near, all perman- ent operators were offered transfers to Clinton or other n earthy. centres.
