MacLeod Ross) The Rose, probably the best known and best beloved of all flowers, is now demanding the at- tention of its enthusiastic growers. .Pruning: In spite of protective hillirig-up, many growers lost some plants to the 16w temperatures of last winter. Climbers seem to have been the, worst hit, but it is still too early to be sure- which por- tions are killed and pruning should be ' deferred until mortality i$• established. Hybrid teas, on the other hand, should have been pruned ere this. Here, pruning depends 'on what you desire. Heavy pruning gives fewer . but larger blooms, light pruning, more but smaller ones. All dead wood is cut right down to the bu union. The remaining canes should be cleanly cut about 14 inch above an outward shdwing bud, For general practice, leave five buds above ground on each cane. Ramblers bloom on shoots which arise in the Spring bn wood grown in the pre- vious summer. Prune only dead and weak shoots. Spraying: Last July and August black spot was very •prevalent and too' many precautions cannot be taken against it. Spraying always seems } f. s HARRY et, more effective than dusting and an application of Triogen now and every ten days during the early growing season, before rain pre- ferably, is desirable. In midsum- mer, spray weekly, especially in rainy weather or when insects are numerous. Black spotted leaves must be treated like the plague, picked off and burnt. 'In Novem- ber, It is a good plan to soak the soil surrounding the rose trees with a solution of Jeyes Fluid -1O tablespoons to the gal- lon of water, applying a gallon, Roses deteriorate very (laic* ,they do, not get regular plentiful supplies of food. Last year, Several members were intro- duced to the century old Tonks Mixture and all reported good re- sults. In one oase results were so sensational that it became- neces- 's'ary to award a Tonks Medal for zeal. The ingredients may be pur- chased locally, though it is neces- sary to visit three different stores. Mix dry in a carton: six pounds Superphosphates, five pounds Nit- rate of potash, one pound sulphate of magnesia (Epsom, Salts), one- half pound sulphate of iron and finally four pounds sulphate of lime (Plaster of Paris). The dosage is four ounces per -square yard and the cost $2.00 for 66 square yards. The mixture is applied' dry in a shallow circular furrow dug with ''a trawl, at about nine inches radius GODERLC$, MEN'S INTERMEDIATE SORSALL TEMA (Last Year's "A” Finalists) Anyone interested turn out at the Arena Diamond THURSDAY NIGHT, MAY 21: — ALL POSITIONS OPEN ' — HAVE YOU YOUR TICKET FOR THE • TURKEY SUPPER AI NILE on Wednesday May 27ih? Here are two useful books for the gardener --Penguin Handbooks No. 4Q on Annuals and Biennials and No. 37 on Roses. The former is prepared in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society and is very appropriate for this climate. Anderson's Book Store has promis- ed to stock them both.
