Aren't those people fortnnate
who are making the arrangements
for the Royal Tour? They're get-
ting all kinds of help in planning
the Queen's vlstt this sununer.
Foremost among the generous
and unselfish assistance they are
receiving' is a lot of free advice
from newspaper columnists. A
peculiar spawn of the last few
decades, the columnist is a isimped-
up newspaperman or woman, who
speedily acquires ttie certainty that
his, or her, opinions carry only a
little less weightthan the scrip-
tures.
* 4•
With a few notable exc-eptra ,
the columnists have an almost des-
perate • urge te-be the voice of the
"little'' man. Their stuff is written
to be gulped, net digested, by the
"man in the street," that nebulous
character, and the "average house-
wife," another non-existent per-
sonage,

stuff entertaining. They are, in
fact, the court jesters of the age.
Their sharp tongues and impudence
are tolerated by that mighty, mon
arch who rules the ,pOblic press,
the Constant Reader. He is amused
by then), fend of them at times,
occasionally listens to them with
half an ear. But when he is not
n the mood, one .growl sends them
scuttling to the scullery.

These days, a favorite theme of
some columnists is a new deal for
the Royal Tour. They want the
Queen to meet the "common Fteci-
ple," to get the flavor of the "real
Canada" this,eumyner. They de-
mand, these pipsqueak prophets,
that the people in charge of the
tour eliminate all Romp and cere-
mony, cut out the reception lines
and banish the Official banquets.
*
They. want the Queen to visit
supermarkets, go on picnics, take
part in square dances, and engage
in all sorts of similar asinine
antics. if the supermarket is a
of our Canadian way of
life, take me back to dear old
Dixie.
* *
And what's so great about the
"common peOple"? .1 know a lot
of common people. In fact, my
wife often -tells me I'm FIS common
as, they come. And frankly, I'm
not particularly impressed by them.
Uncommon people are much more
interesting.

It's bad enough•having,to shake
the ' hot little hands of a few
thousand' .perspiring officials and
their quivering wives, without get7
ting all clownedup, with the com-
mon people 11 Her Majesty Was
interested in meeting common
people, she wouldn't need to come
all the way to Canada, They have
plenty of them in England.
*
Another thing. What hgve the
Common people done to earn the
privilege of a greeting or a hand-
shake from the Queen? All they've
done is pay their taxes, and that
under -vehement protest and with
the greatest • reluctance.
*4 *
.On the other hand, Mayor Mal
Function and Mr.. Seldom Wright,
M.P., have been listening to our
-cam-plaints- alb,eut- -sewers-, °dr -de:
mands • for new post offices, for
years, They have labored through'
many a dreary task for us, while
we were out fishing, or home
watching TV. "Why shouldn't they,
as our rorireentatives, have the
honor and the pleasure, if they
get a chance to meet, the Queen?
They've earned It
* *
Of course; if she just happened
to bump into some of us common
types, in a :purely spontaneous way,
that would be different. Like, for
example, the. Royal Yacht will be
passing within. 50 _miles of our
-house, on July 4th. This I know.
And by pure coincidence, I 'just
happen 1.6 have a fast launch char -
'Wed for the fourth .Of July.
Now, if we just happened to be
passing right in front of the Royal
Yacht that day, and our boat
happened, to catch fire, and I had
to , throw the kids, the dog, and
the Qld Lady into Georgian Bay,
and Prince Phillip demanded that
the Yacht stop and take us aboard,
well, that would be different, and
sort of democratic, and I'm Eve
we'd- el -have w. nice

-Maybe I should put life -jackets
on them, though, just in case.

an efficient welder, it will cut, braze, solder and heat, -it will
hard -face all wearing equipment; and thaw water pipes in
minutes (even underground). For those cold mornings, this
repair unit has a battery ,charger, 6 or 12 volts, which can be
used as a booster. These are only a few of the jobs this repair
unit could do fotl you!

Did you ever stand outside, St.
Ann's Church for half an hour, in
a Mvehester ra,i,n, waiting foran
unknown wedding party to arrive?
I did yesterdaY.' And when they
came, the bride's father WAS de-
finitely oriental and the bride was
very beautiftil—partly oriental and
partly occidental.
This has been a week of firsts—
my first sight of Ireland, and of
Scotland and England. My first
ride on an English arterial road,
on the 'iwrong" side. My first
taste of a warm hearted Lanca-
shire welcome' from in-laws I had
never seen. Right this moment,
the house is being literally turned
upside down, for Sunday tea for
more than 20 people. I have seen
a !beautifully decorated "Welcome",
cake. I hate to think of what znY
stomach will feel like after sampl-
ing all the delicious food. Being
me, r shall probably de more than
sample it, too.
I have just had my first ex-
perience -in driving a ear myself
on the left hand side and shifting
gears with my left hand and mak-
ing awkward right hand turns. I
may not have qualified for a lic-
ence, 'IAut the car is still intact.
I have seen barrow loads of
flowers and frit on the street
and have bought roses for 3e each.
The daffodils were lying in rows
in boxes with their faces to the
sun. Spring is well ddvariced here.
iThe early flowers are done, daf-
fodils and tulips beginning to fade,
and the blossoms are blowing off

Sailing down the Firth of Clyde
last Tuesday was wonderful: The
shoreline is quite level with rug-
ged hlils close behind. The lower
slopes *ere lush and green but
the,, tops were brown and barren.
I think I saw sheep and edws on
the pastures. We • were • able to
distinguish -the Sleeping Warrior
of Arran and the night before we
had seen Ailsa. Craig which is
slowly being cut into curling
stones. Also on Monday night we
saw the . sun set ibehind the Mull
of -Kintyce.
On Friday we were taken to
Prestbury, a very old Cheshire
village. Parking signs say this
side on even 'claYs, the other -side -
on odd days. Too bad if you
didn't know the date. Prestibury
is chiefly noted for its church
which was built !between 1230 and
1275-700 years ago. The first
vicar was Master Hugh. I cannot
try to describe the church to you,
but it *as lovely. Behind it is a
little Norman Chapel built in 1210,

On the (way ,to Prestibury, we
stopped to look at an old stone
cross. It had no ingetiption but
there were three oxen heads carv-
