Skilled Horticulturists Existed 4,0.00
Years Ago, Speaker Telis local Group
The rapt attention of a large
audience was a'trilbute to the elo-
quent guest speaker, at the meet-
ing of Goderich 'Horticultural So-
ciety at MacKay Hall on Friday
evening. Mr. G. 'Marshall Bartram,
of the Ontario. Federation of Nabur-
alists, said that "4000 years ago
there were Willed horticulturists '
He' quoted some of the many pass-
age§ from the Bible which 'refer
to the plants of biblical times and
traced the later development of
the culture to the modern trend,
of people getting back to a keen
interest in gardening.
Mr.- Bartram stated that "na-
ture's appeal to us is from Curios-
ity, an inherent sense of beauty
and from an -elemental love of
living things. The world belongs
as much to those who- came after
us as it does to us, hence the need
for conservation,gf our woods, our
waters and our wildlife.”
Skilful photography revealed
"nature patterns" of spring, sum-
mer and winter, in unique color
slides. The hidden .beauty of the
leaf ``'buds' of our common trees
was startling, in microscopic
views; the successive harmony of
nature's ,colors; pictures which
magnified ..both common and rare

Second grain boat in was. the
Malietoa with' 157,000 bushels of
corn from Chicago. It arrived at
the Goderich Elevator and Transit

While a little of this corn will re-

majority of it will be trans -shipped
from here by rail, to points in
Eastern United States. - This in-
