Notorious Mount Vesuvius
One of the great disasters of this
century occured 50 years ago on
December 28, 1908. On that day,
an eruption of Mount Vesuvius
'al'most wiped out the city of Mes-
sina. More than 100,000 people
'were killed. This volcano has al-
ways been notorious. for its fre
quent explosions. They seem to
occur in greups, followed by quiet
periods that sometimes last many
years.
