While various incidents have
been and are being investigated
there ,are no laboratory test eon-
firmatIons as yet of rabies in Huron
County, Dr, It: M. Alsip, Huron
M.041„, told the Signal -Star.,
Every precaution is being taken,
howeyer, because of the proximity
to Huron County of au epidemic
in the red fox which has been.
ehiefly centred in Grey Co.unty.-.-.
An explanatory circular has been
sent out by the Huron County
Health Unit to all municipalities -in
Huron County which reads, in part,
as follows:
Rabies or hydrophobia is:a viols
infection which attacks the nervom
system. It is.spreall to humans and.
warm-blooded animals by the in-
troduction into the body of the
rabies .• virus, - and -this is usually
by the bite of a rabid animal. On
rare occasions it has developed
from the contact of the saliva of
such. an animal with a scratch or
other break in the skin of the
victim.
.Because of various factors such
as the intervention of clothing, the
severity and position of the bite.
rabies does' not necessarily develop
following an attack by an infected,
animal—same authorities state that
only five to fifteen per cent 'of
persons bitten by rabid dogs, and
untreated, actually develop the
disease.
The. incubation period varies
with the site and severity of the
wbund andmay be two to six
weeks or longer. Oncethe symp-
toms of rabies appear in man or
aninial, death follows in two to
six days.
In 'dogs, the early symptoms are:.
change of disposition, restlessness,
loss of appetite, , tendency to hide.
Soon the appetite becomes abnorm-
al and the aninialmay try to eat
glass, storied, etc. Later it may
push -about- slaggating._ wav.
falling down from time to time.
At this time snapping . and biting
tendencies are common, 'saliva
pours out of the mouth, and the
bark is' harsher. The final stage is
one of paralysis, with the lower
jaw and hind limb first affected:
Though the 'animal -may by this
-be .unable—to stand, it can
often still bite. Death occurs after
a few days' illness. . • •
Certain variations may -occur in
the illness, and the paralytic val.
ptoms may be More prominent,
with little of the "furious" behav•
lour.; Even in animals with none -
of the classical symptoms, the lab•
orat,ary has established a diagnosis

The Dog Tax and'ilve Stock WO
tection Act provide,s for by-laws to
be passed by local municipalities
for the Licensing Of dogs and the
control ef an Y running at large.
Rabies vaccination is advisable for
dogs, especially if they are allowed
to run on a farm or are used for
hunting, The animal vaccine for
rabies is safe and may be secured
at nominal cost from a practicing
veterinarian.
-Recommend Vaccination
Not only dogs, but cats, foxes,
wolves and other warm-blooded
animals may carry rabies. _Live-
stock may become infected by at-
tacks from rabid animals, and
should, therefore, be vaccinated
when epidemic
There are special 'people in your
area who cam help when rabies
threatens. For example, in the
case of illness in pets and live -
Stock, a veterinarian can advise
the owner; in the case of wildlife,
a conservation officer of the On•
barip Department of Lands and
Forests is ready to assist; where
stray dogs or cats show strange be-
haviour, the dogcatcher or police
should be notified.
The final' authority, however,
with regard to rabies in animals, is
the Health of Animals Division of
the Canada Department of Agricul-
ture. The Health of Animals office
for this county situated in the
Post Office building, Seaforth, tele-
phone 32, Notify them of all
cases of animal rabies.
Should a human be bitten by a
rabid, or suspect rabid animal,
wash the. wound promptly with
soap and water 'and place the pat-
ient under the care pf a physician.
Notify the Medical Officer of
Health. DO NOT SHOOT OR DE-
SlItOY THE DOG OR ANIMAL
WHICH A1TACKED. The animal,
however, should be confined in a
safe place under veterinary super-
-Vision for at leasi T4--- days. The-
-premature' killing of the animal
might prevent accurate diagnosis
of rabies. Since rabies vaccination
of humans is still a serious pro-
cedure and riot without cornplica-
. tions, physicians do •not' wish to
proceed with it unless the danger
is
If it is impossible to safelY-con-
fine a suspect animal which has" at-
tacked or injured a human, de,
struction of the animal becomes
necessary. ,Under these- circum-
stances,- the animal should not be
shot through the head: This dam=

attrry confirmation difficult or ,im-
possible. Do not handle a suspect
