At an executive meeting of the
Huron County Federation of Agri-
culture, tentative plans were made
for the coining Prince and Princess'
contest. We hope that' those in-
terested
nterested will get their entries in
as soon as possible as it is 'difficult
to make the necessary arrange.
ments until we have some idea of,
the number of contestants. , Re-
member all farm' young people be-
tween 16 and 29 are eligible.
This past week or two I have
been particularly interested in ob-
taining a re* heifers to add to my
cow herd. 1 wanted reasonably
good quality, carrying little finish.
After attending a couple of com-
munity sales I cannot 'understand
the comparative..• prices being bid,
- Here's one example: a good qual-
ity' Shorthorn heifer weighing 740,
but; carrying'' little finish, was bid
i4OE:BULY
similar heifer, well but not over
finished, weighing 830, sold for
$22.00. I'm quite sure that the
extra 90 lbs. was all tneat.
If it had been a farmer wanting
a good feeder for perhaps a future
cow I could have understood him
bidding the first heifer up to' the
$20.10 or even higher but it was
a packer who bought both these
animals.
I have, always thought that the
packer was really not interested
in cattle but rather in the actual
meat from that animal. If this
were the case, the meat from the
first heifer wouldn't be as nice
quality and would certainly be
much dearer.
There must be a great deal for
farmers to learn about the process-
ing of beef. Either the thin heifer
was too dear or the finished heifer

little way of knowing how 'much
finish cattle should have or what
price differential there should be
