:NITER STATES.
For several weeks past explosions
have been heard and their force felt in
the vicinity of T.00kwood, Mo., like
heavy blasting, growing more violent
each day. Rouses were shaken, and
the swaying of the dwellings brought
the people out of their beds. The
whole population fled into the streets
for safety. The shocks were alarmingly
severe. Its course seemed to be from
the north to south.
The largest representative body of
women the world has ever known will
assemble at Washington on the 13th.
of February next. An idea of the im-
portance of this convention may be
gained from the tact that eleven of
the most important national organiz-
ations of women will t e represented.
It will be held under the auspices of
the International, council of Women,
of which Millicent Garrett Fawcett, of
England, is president. and the Nat-
ional Council of Women of the United
States. All organizations of women
will be received into auxiliary mem-
bership, provided such are interested
in the advancement of women's work
in education, philanthropy, reform
and social culture.
