And I'm not at all sure that it's been a change for tale better. * r. This ()fiat thought came to mo tonight. We've had a week. of real, old-fashioned, hot summer weather, and as 1 .sat hero in ihe quiet, cool kitchen with nothing but the thundering of the moths against the screen doer to dit- tract me, 1 got reminiscingLabout summer in the '20's:sohon rwas a skinny, little, freckle -faced kid,' * For some strange reason, in those. days kids didn't ,gome run- 'ning in to their mothers eight times a day, whinning: "What'll we do, Mom? Gee, there's no fun outside. How about taking us for a swim? Can we have a nickle for a popsickle?" * * * Quite the contrary. Mothers in thosedays practically had to call. the police to locate their young- sters so theecould drag them in and feed them three times a day. For children of those times, there simply were not enough hours in the day, and night always %filar •too early. * *" * For a boy, in those days, there were about 480 fascinating things to 'do on a fine-atimmer day. There were. ea, organind. swimmigg, les- sons, no organizd no organized anything. Everything Was beautifully disorganized.' You snatched a bread -and -jam sandwich in the cool, bright of the morning, and, took off like a scared. rabbit. • Maybe ,you went up to i'he fair- grounds and played hardball (soft. ball was a girl'sgame in those days) all morning. There'd be about twelve kids on each side, and every pitch, every close play, was argued violently, With a lot of pushing inthe chest and fierce repartee like: "Oh, Yeah? Sez Who?" • * 4: Maybe you took a swing around by the sandpit, crawled into the carefully concealed cave and lay around with the gang, smoking monkey tobacco in toilet paper, and plotting a horrible fate for the gang in the next street over. * After supper, a swift gulping of corn en the cob and cold apple sauce, new delights beckoned. You could climb into the tree -house and kick little girls in the face when they tried to climb up. There was Run -Sheep -Run and Redlight in ther gathering dusk. There was creep- ing up, with suppressed giggles, on your big sister and her beau as they sat in suspiciods silence on the porch. * * It was with the sharpest of pain and the mast bitter of sorrow that you heard your ;mother's whistle or piercing "Y000Hoo" tollifig the knell of parting day. Every Mo- ther 'had a differentcall for her brood, and we knew our own from two blocks away. And every father had tho same treatment for kids who failed to respond—I hearty .clip on the_chops. We came home, not joyfully, but promptly. The alitomobile-and-television , have changed all that' Kids are 'all over, the country now, on summer evenings. They're driven some- where to play ball, with a tot of other "organized" boys. Orthey've wheedled their folks into 'taking them to .the drive-in theatre. Or they're sleeping in strange beds at somebody's cottage, while theit parents sit around drinking gin collinses. * * * Or the poor little souls are crouched, with senseless stare, in front of a TV set, watching a replay of one of last winter's pro- grammes, while in the soft, warm outdoors, the birds and the trees and, ,the moon mourn 'the days when the piping voices of children at play provided a counterpoint to the mejoety of ,a velvet., summer evening. Maybe you just sat ontop of a wall, in the sun, chewing licorice and seeing who could spit the farth- est, Maybe you'd "sneak up" on semetiody, traviling through tomafo plants'and corn stalks until -you- lay there, knife between your teeth, watching every move of a woman hanging out her clothes, in happy ignorance of, the fact that only tho guns poking from the -j --Star brings -quick -result . • • • 71,1, 4 • • ----...., ATTEND CONVENTION „ .
