' In former (lay's, about 90 per
cent ,;f '411 hags were delivered by
truckers _tireLt to the processor'.a
plant' and there was no open bid-
ding' on the public market for the
hogs. Under this system a number
of abuses crept lzl.
- if a packer needed more hugs he
would arrange with truckers to
bring the hogs directly to his plant
instead of to some other plant. In,
order to encourage truckers to do
this, the packers were `obliged to
make payments to them.
Had No Say
Under such conditions, the farm-
..
er had no say• in the selling of his

lishment of the present co-oper-
ative marketing system. As there
has been some opposition to the
plan, officials at Queen's..Iark have
called another vote to see if farm-
ers are still )ehind. the plan. On
1k :1at - tel, . when the plan was
originally approved, over 98 pe
cent voted in favor.
Under the regulations set up. for
the voting there will benne pollin

cases this will be located at th
township 'hall. If there arse over
350 voters on the list, there will
be two ballot boxes at Inc same
place.
News By Teletype
Fagn ers deliver their hogs to
one of the 16 marketing yards
throughout the province. Then by
teletype, the sales office is advised
of the delivery and sells the hogs
-fob the marketing yard.
In the past, when the processors
controlled the deliveries, only
about 10 per cent of the hogs went
to the open market., This was not
enough to affect the ultimate price

the packers paid. Now with about
90 per cent of all hogs killed in
,Ontario going through the opezr
yards of the marketing agency,
salesmen have scope in establish-
ing the ,pricee.
Under the present system the
hogs are sold only to a buyer who
'will give some assurance of slaugh-
tering them quickly.
The smaller packing plants pre-
fer the' present system because it
gives them an equal chance to buy
hogs. These small' plants have
greatly expanded their business
under the present system. This
has meant more aggressive sales-
maziship by the small packers, re-
sulting in more competition for
business with retail stores.
