Convicted Third Time,
liver Jaded 60 Days
-Convicted for the third time of
driving while prohibited, Joseph
R. Daer, age about 21; of Goderich,
was sentenced to 60 days in jail
when he appeared 4n magistrate's
court Thursday.
The youth pleaded not guilty;
no witnesses were called to the
stand by the defence. .
Constable 'Martin, Horan said
that he and Constable Albert
South Were in the cruise; on Huron
rad, near - Walnut street, at 2.50
a.n. on iMay 22 when they saw a
man they recognized as .Daer be-
hind the wheel of a vehicle. The
cruiser turned and followed the
car to the youth's home. As the
police pulled up, they saw two
men fleeing in the direction of the
house.
As the constables neared the
house,, Joseph 'Daer came to meet
them. He said that the man who
was driving was inside the .house.
Constable Horan said that he did
not go inside the house to ask the
other man if he was the driver,
because the officer was certain that
Daer had been. driving.
Robert Carrick, of Goderich, also
appeared in court on a charge of
driving while prohibited. He
pleaded guilty and was lined OM
and costs or two weeks in jail.
Evidently, Carrick was driving
from Bruce street onto Victoria
street, in someone else's car, when

Robert Frederick O'Neill and
Ernest William Hawkins, both of
Clinton RCAF Station, pleaded
guilty to joyriding in a car taken
off the lot of Goderich Motors Ltd.,
South street. They were instructed
to come back to court in two
weeks for sentencing.

Robert Robinson, 17, of Clinton,
was fined $15 and costs after he
pleaded gidlty to wilfully damag-.

June 13. He was ordered to repair
the twin radio aerials which he
-broke off the auto of another yotith
against whom he seemed to have
a pet hate.
Kenneth Alan Ludford, of Lori,
don, was fined $15 and costs for
speeding -in Stanley 'Township On
May 27. He was driving at speeds
up to 80 mph, according to a Pro-
vincial Police officer,. but Ludford,
who appeared in court, said he
did not recall going over 65 mph.
Reginald C. Riehl, of R.R. 5,
Goderich, was fined $10 and costs
for speeding in Goderich on May
31. He .pleaded notguilty. Pro-
vincial Constable M, Groves and
Town Constable. G. McIntyre testi-
fied in the ' case.

RCAF Station, was fined five- dol-
lars and costs for driving while
unaccompanied by a licensed
driven.— Lajeunesse and his pas-
senger both held 60 -day permits,
said Provincial Constable D. Hobbs,
of Goderich.

mighty good come next winter, so
I thought you'd like to try this
recipe which I've found tae most
successful:
STRAWBERRY PRESERVES
6 cups small -whole berries
(about 2 quarts firm ripe
small strawberries)
1/2 cup water
7 cups (3 lbs.) sugar
, y2 bottle Certo
Prepare the strawberries.- Hull
about 2 quarts small strawberries.
Measure 6 cups whole berries
(firmly packed without crushihg)
into a very large saucepan. Add
water and sugar. '
Stow, make your preseria-Place
over'high heat and 'bring to a full
rolling boil, stirring .carefully to
keep fruit whole. tieduce heat and
boil gently 3 minutes. 'Remove
from heat and at once stir in

.Asked bY the 'Signal:Star' what
changes she had noticed in the
past quarter of a century in the
girl students at such a school as
H-avergal, Dr. Smith looked up,
from her temporary job or:picking
strawberries from her garden and.
smiled. "That's difficult' to • say,"
she stated, "but I think the girls
take their studies more seriously
than they did 25 years ago. A
larger percentage of them go on
, to university than ever before,Of
the 40 students who were in 'the
graduating class last year, n of
thern went on to university while
others went to other fields to fur-
ther' their studies or went into
nursing, etc."
She expressed the belief that
more girls go on to university from -
a school such as Havergal than do
students at collegiates.
More cordial relations between
students,r-and staff and mare free-
dom allowed the students were
other changes she had noticed in
the past 25 years, she stated. It is

Dr. Smith's father, Arthur Smith,
and her uncle, Frank Smith, oper-
ated the old tannery at Goderich
for many years. She was educated
at (1DCI and' the University of
Toronto, and received her .PhD
from Yale.
