Now suppose Canadians changed

Naturally, such a calamity won't
occur :because 'Canadians know the
importance of dairy„foods in their
daily diet. • ,
By the same token, the more
dairy foods you consume, the more
the whole economy benefits. And
this is an ideal time to help your-
self to a large measure of these
health -giving foods and a share in
the economic progress of Canada.

Performance - Of
Bison tattle,
Hereford Calves
•At the . Range Experimental
Farm at Manyberries,',Alta:, feed-
lot finishing experiments were car-
ried out in 1952-5:1 and 1956-57, to
find out how Cattalo calves (Bison
crossed with domestic, beet breeds)
would compare with Bison calves
and Hereford calves. II. F. Pet'e'rs,
Superintehden.t°of the Experiment:
al Farm reports that the Cattalo
calves made significantly greater
gains than .the Bison 'hut loWer
gains than the Hereford calves:
He says, there was a significant
increase in dressing pr•runtagc
land a reduction in earcaSS grade
as the proportion of bison 'breeding
increased. The Cattalo calves h,id
a significantly higher proportion
of carcass weight in the hind
quarters than bison 'Incl a lower
proportion than I•Ieref:ords Bison
calves shrank appreciably less in
shipment to market than the. Cit-
talo• and Herefords in Toth ex'
perirnents. '
In ttiese tests, Cattalo calves mit
of the first cross (Hereford hulls x
Bison cows) were separated from
ithe Cattalo calves out of backcross
(progeny from' a`f ret cross- hi t.(1
back to,'1=Tereferd bull) and inter•
bred cows. In the first exheri
ment (1952-53) there was -no real
difference between the two groups
of Cattalo. In the second 'cexperi•
merit the two Cattalo types dili'ered
significantly in feed.lot gain, Calves
froin the backcross and inter -bred
cows dutgained- those from first
cross cows.
In the first experiment, the Here-
fords had average gains of 48
pounds more than the Cattalo and
138 pounds more than, the Bisori
in the 1.96' -clay feeding period,. In
the second experiment, ,the Tlerr,•
fords- hats-•--•a-vei'ege---ga-i-n& of -451
pounds more than Cattalo front
backcross cows.,. and • 250 .pounds
more than Bison: In this test the
feeding period was 197 days.
The- development of the "Cat•
talo," a 'cross between the buffalo
and domestic beef breeds, is the
result of attempts by research lTH'tl
of the Canada Department of Agri
culture to breed a range beef
animal for Western and North
Western Canada. It wac hoped
that this cross would combine the
hardy characteristics of -the Bison
and the 'superior meat qualities
of the domestic breeds. This work
was started at the Scott, Sask., Ex -
peri. ental Farm, later moved' to
the 1 uffalo Park, Wainwright, Al•
