Despite continued warnings
as to the growing Scarcity of
lakefront property and of the
, need for a public park beside
the lake in Huron Connor, the
•County .Cauncil at its June ses-
sion failed to favor the idea.
By a vote of 28-5, County Coun-
cil decided against buying lake" -
front property near St. Joseph e
•for use as.a county park. This
property, a mile and, a .auarter
north of St Joseph, was estim,
ated at 19 acres and priced
at 8,17,000.
John Kernighan, reeve of
Colborne and Chairman of the
reforestation committee, re-
ported to Council that his com-
mittee had inspected the pro-
perty;.but preferred to have
the whole Council make the
decision whether Ait should be
.bought.,,
Valentine Becker, reeve of ,
Stanley, and one of the.five
who voted to buy the Property,
told Council it has more than •
60rods of excellent 'sand
beach, and is at the terminus
of a township road. "We all
'feel we need land like this,"
•said Reeve Becker. "This land
is getting picked 'on 'along the
beach, and, soon there ,won't
be any left, and people won't •
be able to go down to the
water," •
Cecil Blake, reeve of Ash-
field, said he doubted whether
. the Ontario government would
be interested in helping buy
, any park land of less than 50
acres extent.
