Take the case o llVf.r. GG. and' family fer ex- ample: It was just ten yearS ago they first contacted The •Salvation Army Welfare office for, aSsistande. 'Times were hard and the family needed food and „clothing. The Weare files. tell their own 'story. Four years of a hand -to -Mouth existence. Longer periods between jobs. Food and clothing orders and assistance with the rent. More frequent changes of addresS aaccheaper rooms were 'found. Then—disaster for Mrs. . Her husband unable to face the family burden any 1,onger—deserted. For six long years Mrs. G. strug- gled on Iilone. The notations on her file speak of the brave effort to support a growing family. Then came word from Northern BC.— Mr, G. desired "reconcillation, with his wife and family. Attracted to The'Salvation Army, Mr. 0, had professed conversion and had for, several months proved I•his sincerity. The test of his new- found Christianity was first in- dicated when he got•in touch with his wife and sent her a substantial amount for her support. As his monetary position became more secure; he began to•think seriously of re-establishing his home. It would be unwise, to give up a steady job—and with present com- mitments he would •hve to save for, a long time before he could send for his family. It would mean beginning all over again When investigation proved Mr. G. could support his family, once they had arrived in town, plans were made by the welfare office for the family to travel west. • It was an exciting day when the Army Major arrived with a parcel' of shoes and clothing for the fam- ily and of course more important adult arid four children's tickets,. for that long, long journey to their daddy three thousand miles away. • Their joy knew no bounds. , At last they were going to have a real. home like other people and years of want and, un- certainty would be ended. The mother was intensely grateful for reconciliation. It was 'the best' Christmas gift any family could reserve that December day 1957—when a re- stored father met his still loving wife and four wondering children on the station platform. Of course, the Army Major was on hand ••to welcome the family "home." From a spot of ink—to furnish, ing •a home, it is the inter of this "arn-iy of the helping hap that has meant the difference be- tween health and sickness. between comfort and misery, even between life and death to tens of thousands of pdople whose needs have been suck as to come _within the wide sweep of this Army's -ministrations.
