From the architects' point of
view, the addition of the new wing
to Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital presented a real (chal-
lenge. Hospitals, because of the
complicated rnatttre U. -their lay
outs, are the anost expensive build-
ing types that we have. The Board
ofGovernors of the Alexandra
Marine and General Hospital had
a very limited budget to work
with and yet the neer} for proper
operating room's, delivery .rooms,
nurseries, etc., forced themp.to
e
a most ambitious building pr ct.
It was this attempt to reconcile the
modest budget with the real needs
of the hospital which proved to be
the biggest problem confronting
the architects.
Another Major problem was how
to tie a new building in with the
existing facilities and yet cause
the .least disruption of continuing
ha ,ital services.

in the eventual modernization of
the entire hospital. All the ser-
vices for a 200 bed hospital are in-
corporated into this new wing. In
the future it will only be necessary
to rip down the old house and
build wards or bed space, a much
less costly venture than the pre-
sent building program which in-
corporates all the expensive areas
such as operating suites,." delivery
suites, emergency suite, X-ray
suite, kitchen, laboratories, pharm-
acy, central sterilizing, to mention
only a few of the areas contained
in the new wing. Some comments
have been heard about the con-
trast in the color of brick between
the new and the old wings. The
point is _ actually proof . of the
Board's optimistic long range plan-
ning that in a period of 10-20 years
all the existing obsolete present
buildings will be replaced and the
entire new structure will thatch
the new wing.
Visitors to -the new wing will
notice the extensive use of color
in the interior of the buildl.ng.
The architect's feel strongly that
a hospital building need not be a
depressing institution. bright

iors is easily seen by the public.
In conclusion, this firm of archi-
tects and engineers whom you have
chosen to design your hospital,
would like publicly, to ,go on recor
as stating that it has been a sincere
pleasure,to work with. your .Board
of Governors and those people of
the community at Goderich with
whom we have been in touch.
There has been, in fact, none, of
the usual frictions that seem to

time or other during the course
of .construction".•
